PWN3D it's official, the Miata is cursed! Diff will eat itself, and the infection spreads

The Miata has been a long project since the accident 4 months ago. Just as of last friday it was inspected/insured/registered and a legal roadgoing vehicle again.

Opposed to a Divit maker in the driveway as it had been.

Yesterday I went to pick it up at the house to take it back to Boston. I figured I'd take it for a minor shakedown run locally to see if anything falls off.

I got my wish!
I crested a hill on this backroad that usually isn't a problem. As I crested I hear a bang and coming down the back side I have no power to the rear wheels.

Pull over, I can hear the transmission moving when I have it in gear but the car isn't.
I leave it in gear and walk around to the rear and I can see one of the two output shafts was spinning, even tho the end spinning freely should have been connected to a splined hub.

But, the rear diff is sitting oddly.
The rock struck the diff and broke off one of two casted ears on the rear half of the housing.

the diff troqued and pulled the passenger side output shaft out of the splines leaving me with a free spinning open diff.

So yeah, completely unrelated to the previous 4 months work. I never even touched the rear diff beyond disconnecting the driveshaft.

So, the Miata is broken again after only 2 minutes of drive time.
there has to be a message in this somewhere..

Are these problems related to when you spun the thing into the ditch?

I concur.. I'm dissapointed in the level of comprehension in here.
Given, I type like bad haiku.. but the nouns and verbs exist there in a proper order.

Funny thing is.. it's parked in the garage right now next to a 64' Jaguar E-type. Possibly it's airborne.

Do yourself a favor and read Peter Egan's series of R&T columns on E-Type restos before you go that route.

Maybe a Subie-style rear diffy protector for the Miata?

Bah...understeered into a rock = spun out into a ditch according to -=c=-'s "OT remembrance level #7".

regardless...it's time to yank the 1.8 out and swap it into your motorcycle...

That route is reserved for my father.
He had a recent run in with working on the e-type.

Waterpump died.. replaced it, but the replacement hosuing wasn't the same shape. It had been convereted from a single serpentine belt to two seperate smaller belts and had a "double" pully on it now.

had to grind the casting down to get it to fit.
was awesome.

Mine hasnt done anything bad lately but I know the rear diff isnt going to be around much longer. 166,000 miles on a 1.6 LSD and I am running a 1.8 from a 97 miata on it... its a ticking time bomb .

NEVER!!!
I sunk so much time and money into this thing over the last four months to turn tail because of a $150 diff housing and 2-3hrs of work

Doesn't sound logical eh?

you don't want my 1.8..
you know you can get one for all of $700ish.
I know that's how much mine cost.
I'll even help with the install.. or hinder.. all based on perspective.
