Default Opinions: Sell the TS, Buy an SVT Focus?

Ok, I found quite a deal here, 2002 SVT Focus, Blue, 6 speed, HIDs, 24K, $10,900

I'm not sure why, but I've been hooked on the Focus lately, probably because my GF's stock ZX3 handles better than my TS does with a full suspension swap!

Either way, I owe about $8300 on the TS, it's worth about $12,500 trade-in value. It's slow, its not great on gas and I keep pouring money into it just to get myself to like it. I love having a wagon because of my kayaks, Mtn. Bikes and I tend to go camping alot, but I think I could still fit most of my stuff into a hatchback.

So what do you guys think? Should I or shouldn't I?

Hm... Your total debt is $8300. Sell TS - $12500 = $4000 cash in hand. Get Focus for $10900 - $4000 = $6900 debt. It will be a wash after factoring in the taxes and other random fees.

If you like the car that much better, why not

Werd. Just keep in mind the Focus will not be worth much in a few years. Even though the biggest depreciation hit's probably over, its still not going to hold value well.

I think the SVTF is awesome. I miss mine everyday. The handling alone is great. But now there are a bunch of power upgrades for the SVTF. I can assume you are already on Focaljet.com, Right?

There are some things that do kinda suck about the SVTF.
No respect.
Ford dealers tend to be horrible, and unless you go to an SVT dealer, the average Ford garage has NO idea how to deal with the SVTF.

Other than those dumb things, the SVTF is the best hatch you can get for your $.

fun car, my friend picked one up with no HIDs for $9900 with 21k miles
just changed out his awful stock contis with rt615s (215/40), handling is incredible

cons: loudest blinker ever, haha...fun nonetheless

I think my biggest qualm right now is the 2 doors, I tend to do most of the driving right now because my girlfriend has a 2 door.

Our local Ford dealer / service center is awesome, they treat their customers with alot of respect, their work has been second to none and they are enthusiasts about the cars. they have a backroom devoted just to high HP project cars they are restoring or working on.

Depreciation I'm not too worried about, if anything I'd keep it for an Auto-X / Rally-X beater once I buy a new vehicle.

It would be nice to have a car that performs well, handles well, looks good and gets better gas mileage then my TS does. Plus we already have 2 extra sets of Focus wheels sitting in the garage, so I could slap some Blizzaks on for winter and get some decent Yokos or Kumhos for Summer.

Maybe Y2K234567door will let me take his for a spin to see if I like it?

Look for an '03 or '04 with 4-doors then. I think the newer models had less issues with recalls and such too.

Yeah, the 04s solved a bunch of problems from 02/03... I love my SVT ZX3... the HIDs are a must-have.

As far as gas mileage, when compared against my WRX, the SVT is a bargain, but perhaps not compared with a TS. I get about 25MPG of mixed highway/local with the SVT, and about 18 with the WRX on the same commute. The SVTF takes premium fuel, so don't expect to save there.

No LSD in the front means lots of wheelspin when it's wet out if you need to do quick starts (ie, turning onto Rt. 101 in NH from small sideroads), and I haven't had a winter with it yet.

Make sure to go through all the TSBs and get them fixed early, while the warranty is still in effect.

Overall, though, I love the SVT Focus... steering and brakes are awesome, suspension is great (though, it's rough over sudden lips in the road, like when MA is re-paving ramps and whatnot). Power is adequate (coming from a WRX), gearbox is decent (the gearing takes a bit of getting used to). Only complaints so far are throttle response (atrocious and intentional, can be fixed easily with new throttle body or porting the stock one), clutch (flywheel is massive dual-mass affair, slow starts), and seating position (way too high, I don't have enough space for a helmet, going to put in lower seat rails and some Corbeau buckets eventually).

Ya, but then I'd be pushing the price higher than what my car is worth, so it would almost be pointless.

Plus the 4 doors look too close to a ZX5, the 3 door Hatch looks sick

Thanx for all that Andrew, I'm going to have to do alot more thinking, if I remember correctly I'm about 2 or 3 inches taller than you, so I'd have to turn my head sideways with a helmet on.

Figure in all your factors to sell/buy a car. It's pretty easy to drop $1k in stuff you didn't figure in. Taxes, registration and title fees, inspection. You will laugh at gas stations, however.....(I do now with the Mazda) and with good snows, you'll do fine in the snow. You also have only about 15% driveline loss compared with about 25% for AWD so both power and mileage are better with the Focus.

If you don't rice up the car, not only will you not have to worry about respect, nobody will even see you. I think steels with wheel covers is cool.

Gas will be $3 a gallon soon, so you can make up some of the transaction cost.

I'm 6'3", 6'4" on a good day. I also like to sit rather upright, and since the wheel doesn't telescope, and the car has a sunroof, it brings the headroom to pretty much nil.

McRae though Fords were better too

My guess is you'll spend money on either car, but if you can already drive a Focus (albiet not an SVT) when you want... might as well have a different car.

man, now I have to take some pics of mine

definately has the loudest blinker of all times. I'm loving mine for the reasons mentioned above. Granted, I have every option under the sun because of the Euro package, but it is definately a fun car. Throttle lift oversteer is nice

speed safely

I know you're taller than me but I find the headroom issue strange. This car has more headroom than almost any other similar-sized car. Doesnt your seat have height adjustment?

It does, and it's all the way down.

Hard to say for sure, since I have both the WRX and the SVT on the same policy, but the 03 SVT costs less than the 02 WRX for collision/etc...

So it definitely does require premium gas? That's one of the things I'm trying to avoid. Went by a full serve station saturday and almost sharted $3.19 for premium!

No telescoping wheel on the 02 / 03? Weird, my girlfriends 01 ZX3 has a telescoping wheel, doubt its an option install considering she has manual locks and windows!

God, this is going to be a tough one to decide. I think If I didn't have $8300 left to pay off it wouldn't even be a second thought.

The FWD vs. AWD is kind of an issue, but snow tires and a possible ford Racing LSD install would help mitigate that a bit.

But gas prices will be a huge deciding factor considering the TS is only getting 23 mpg mixed city / highway

I'm doing the same math game today: Unload my paid-off TS for one of the last new manual '05 Legacy GT wagons or keep the car and do more important things that make the wife happy?

In a show of my pure unfettered masculinism I think I'm keeping the TS.
