Ooooo, maybe I'll take it! That way all my class competitors can get their very own "I beat the Staff" license plates."

Hope: someone who realizes that costs of club racing T and SS cars have gotten out of control.

Reality: Porsche Caymann will become the car to have in T4

Looks like I owe a friend of mine a beer. He predicted this to a "T" months ago. Damn.

What are your suggestions to curb the costs of T and SS or should we say T1-6

1. Move SSB ans SSC to T4 and T5 instead of T3 and T4
2. Move BMW Z4 out of SSB, and have it run only in T3
3. Move MINI Cooper S out of SSC back into SSB unrestricted
4. Set a target max MSRP in SS and T classes: $50k for T2, $35K for T3, $25k for T4/SSB, $18k for T5/SSC.

For reasoning as to why, here is a post I made on SCCAForums:

In SSC, the addition of the Cooper S (MSRP $19k) doesn't add a lot of cost over the Civic Si (MSRP 17k), but compared to the Mazda 3 ($14k) which is also competitive, it's a 12% increase in price to be competitive over 3 months ago. For the other "entry level" classes, we have a 59% increase in SSB (Z4 $35k vs Miata $22k), and in T2 we have a whopping 92% increase over what will likely be the 800 lb gorilla there in 2005 (Camaro $25k, E46 M3 $48k). If you go back to the SSA vs T3 days, there is $24k for an RX8 vs $16k for a VW VR6 car, and remember that SSA became defunct because it was getting too expensive. This is why IMO Spec Miata needs a to become a National Class: because there is no longer any entry level RWD production based class at a National level.

As for the "Go back to Regional racing if you can't afford it" argument (which I have gotten on this board before), that is exactly the argument that keeps many people like me, in the 30-and-under age bracket, from racing at a National level, and eventually away from SCCA Club Racing totally.

1. I thought they were already doing that? T4 and 5. T3 will be the Saturn Ion Redline, the RX8, S2K etc etc

2. Agreed 100%. I think that once the car dominates in B and T3 is a national class it will go there.

3. Oh yea. Again, I think if they will kick ass at the runoffs they will be moved or restricted.

4. That would be cool except for the fact that some cars offer more performance for the $$. For example the Sti, Evo and Cooper S. With your $$ scheme though, the only real car move that it will affect is the Z4 out of SSB, which I think should go anyways I got to drive one and holy hell it should destroy a Meotter.

1. Nope, from what the recent Fastracks have said, it looks like SSB and T3 will be combined, and SSC will move to T4. I believe that the argument is that all the Miatas will go to Spec Miata, but that still leaves out 13 of the 41 cars that have entered the Runoffs in SSB this year.

3. The only reason it won't happen this year is that none of the top SSC drivers are in MINI's except for possibly TC Kline. If there are a bunch of MINI's in the top 10, then they will likely be restricted in 2006.

4. Bumping a car up a class for performance is OK, down is not. The Camarobirds in T2 IIRC had a MSRP < $25,000 but T2 is the correct class for them. I looked at the possibility for running a Cooper S in SSC at the beginning of the year, and cost of maintenance would be WAY higher for a Cooper S in SSC than for me to run a Miata in SSB even when I factored in that I work for a comapny where I can get MINI parts for well below what they would cost at a dealership. As far as cars that would be affected, The Z4, Cooper S, Cadillac CTS-V, and BMW M3 would all get bumped up.

Anyone want to buy a WRX for me to run in T3 next year? Hey, it's worth a shot

1. Must have missed a fastrack on that, my fault

3. Well, Joel L. who I think is a fast guy couldn't get around a mini at LRP about a month ago. Bring a couple more cars like that and you are going to have mini domination, much like in autox.

4. You made a limit of $50K for T2 That would include both the Caddy and the M3.

I think the WRX WR or whatever the stripped one is, with the 4 pots/2 pots and the 2.5L would be a KickASS T3 car.

Yep, i rechecked, the M3 and CTS-V sneak in under the $50k T2 limit.

Having driven a couple of WRX's on track, IMO they would have to get the Subaru 4-pots approved for use in order to keep brakes on the car for more than a couple of laps. Other than that, I think they should be very competitve with the RX8's and Z4's in T3

The original Car&Driver SS rules (B4 SCCA, it was run as an exibition sponsored by the magazine) called for $2500 cars and a claimer, any competitor could buy any other car for $2500 plus safety gear - roll bar and belts. SCCA adopted this concept to start but dropped all these provisions as time went on.
Now it costs $2500 to make the suspension "stock".

Are you going to go for a walk? Nudge, nudge. Know what I mean, know what I mean. Say no more, say no more.

And yes, I do agree that we're better off for it.
