Question So what's up with a HU that shuts itself off/on a few times?

Hey guys. I have an Alpine CDA-7940, a passive CD tuner that I bought in 1999, and have had in my past two cars (including the RS). Great deck that I may replace with an Eclipse CD8053 in December, but for now it's still great.

However....

This morning I was playing a CD, and the deck just up and shut itself off, then back on again right away. Did this a few times, at no particular time interval in between, though all were within about 10 minutes of each other.

I've seen this happen a couple times before, and chalked it up to glitches, but never in succession like that I don't think. What's that all about? It's run off of a five-channel Alpine MRV-F353 amplifier. Dunno if it's the amp or the deck, though. No other electrical problems with the car, didn't see the dash flicker or anything.

Thanks-
=S2=

If nothing else flashed on the dash then start by checking the harness for a fubar connection...but be prepared for something inside the radio like a broken solder joint.

Well it *is* six years old, in my ownership. The deck came out in '98 or maybe even '97. So it was built back then.... bought by me in '99.

That's a pretty good life cycle, so I wouldn't be completely forlorn if it's dying. But I'll try to check connections first.

Don't think it'd be the amplifier though? Hopefully it is just a connection. That way I can still sell this deck to offset the cost of the 8053, somewhat.

I had the same thing happen to my pioneer HU. It frustrated the hell out of me.

Yes. It shut off and then immediately turned itself back on.

i had this problem with mine as well. check the connection between the face and the unit. you can check this by just pushing the face lightly around where the connection is. if it isn't that i would check your harness.

good one!

clean the contacts between the faceplate and body with a rubber eraser.

I actually thought of that while I was driving to work. Pressed on the faceplate, but this was while it was working again. Let me try the eraser trick.
