Question Need some helpful info regarding collision repairs and insurance.

OK, here's the story, my ex-GF had got into an accident (rear-ended) and the kids parents said they will have their insurance pay for damages.

I told her that I'll buy the parts have them painted and fix the car and save her some money in labor costs and make a few bucks on the side.

Went to get the insurance estimate today and they said it looks like bumper cover damage only but they will subsidize if there is damage to the beam, energy absorber, etc. They said the collision repair facility will need to call them down once they have the bumper cover off the car to re-assess damages.

The issue is I KNOW there is damage under the bumper cover and that the energy absorber needs to be replaced at the very least, however if they need the repair facility to call them over to write another check it seems like I'm stuck with two choices:

1. Tell the ex to keep the check for the cover replacement and fix all the damage myself for free (not the smartest idea).
2. take it to the shop and have them fix it all and get subsidized by insurance

Any ideas on how I can still fix the car and save her some dough?

-Mike.

Thats an old trick in the insurance adjuster's book. They will give you one check and then take another 4 weeks to get a seond and another 8 weeks for the third.

I would take the car to a trusted shop to get a complete estimate. I highly recommend using Gwinnet Collision, talk with Marty. Let him know what you a planning to do. They will do a complete estimate. Submit the estimate to the insurance and get your check, fit car your self and then return to shop for paint work. f the car is not paid off the that can complicate matters. If it is paid for then you shouldn't have a problem.

I usually charge a fee of a 6 pack of Nati Lights for advice like this....

Get with Marty at Gwinnett Collision.

Also, not sure what the law is in GA but I found out that when someone rear-ends you in NC, their insurance is liable for a car rental while your car is in the shop. When someone rear-ended my old honda years ago they dragged things out forever until I found this out. Once they had to fork over the $150/week for the rental, the check miraculously arrived overnight.

Also depending on age of car and the damage, you may want to see if you can get a claim for depreciation due to the car having been in an accident.

Good point, ask the adjuster what he is going to estimate the "loss of value" is. He will likely deny that there is such compensation or that you dont get it. But you can and should. No matter who paints the bumper it won't match a year or two from now and youwill get less for the car when sold.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info! Javid, just name a time and place for your "payment"

I've already suggested that Classic Collision will do the work since I've had great luck with them and they are local to Alpharetta. I'm sure I can still ask them to do a complete estimate on the damage of the car.

Since this is not my car I will have to schedule a time when the ex can go in to get a complete estimate and since I'm having a new hood and rear bumper refinished for my RS they should be flexible.
