I have a set of American Racing Estrellas (Alloy) - 14x6", and I'm curious as to the maximum tire size I can stuff into them. On Tire Rack the largest section width I could find using my wheel size was 215mm. Would tires of this width be safe to run on a 6" wheel? Also I'm curious as to how much the section height of the tire will affect dry performance. I'm running generic 195/70R14's right now and the tires (even when properly inflated) will 'roll' onto thier sidewall under hard cornering, which concerns me. What range should I be looking in as far as section height?
I'm new to all this, as this is the first set of tires I've ever had to buy. Any tips and/or advice would be appreciated. ![]()

For a given wheel, if you want to maintain the same overall diameter, the sidewall height will stay the same no matter what tire you put on.
Go here to see how various size tires will compare with stock: http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi Also, squeezing 215/60s onto your stock wheels will result in poorly supported sidewalls, which means you'll still have that sidewall-rolling feeling when cornering hard. The best advice is to get a set of junkyard 15x6 Subaru alloys. They'll be very cheap. Then you can run a decent performance tire in 205/60-15 or even 205/55-15, which will absolutely transform your handling. |
