Default Anyone familiar with the 4WD system on a 1990 Legacy?

As the title states, I am not familiar with the system as it switches from FWD to 4WD on its own. I picked up a 1990 Legacy to use as my rallycross beater and the 4WD is not working. All the necessary parts are on the car but there is no power being sent to the rear wheels. Any suggestions on what to check to see what could be causing this problem? Thanks in advance.

auto or 5speed? if its an auto, does the power light blink when you start it up? in an auto, its primarily FWD unless the front wheels start to slip then the AWD ecu sends power to the rear wheels (like if you have it in "D" on a lift, all the wheels spin) if the power light in the guage cluster blinks when you start it up, it means there is a problem with the transmission (usually the solenoid that controls the AWD in the back of the transmission is bad). 5speeds are 50/50 split, so i dont know what you got going on if its a 5 speed.

Also, if it's an auto, are you sure the FWD fuse isn't installed?

Warp, here here! I like to start simple and then work my way to worst case scenario. Check the "FWD" fuse holder on the passenger side, near the firewall up high. If there is a fuse there, pull it out. If there is none, then it only gets worse from there.
