Default Head gasket not covered under warranty?

Thought I would share this with the community.

The dealer told me that my head gasket was not covered under the Subaru warranty (8/100,000) because I had an internal leak and the warranty only covered external leaks. Repair cost: $2,200. Geeze, what is up with that?

I called Subaru directly and told them my story. They called the dealer and Subaru decided to cover my repair. Dang - how often does it work like that???

Moral of the story - if you don't like the dealer's answer - call subaru. Who knows, you may get lucky!

Tell the dealer to show you in the warranty where it says that, then jam it up their ass when they can't do so. You shouldn't need to call SoA on something as basic as this.

Good that it worked out, though.

I had a similar issue with my second HG failure. They wanted me to just keep using the coolant mixture they offered. I did it twice and it would work for about 5000kms before leaking again. I told them if they didn't do the HG repair my block would eventually need replacing and it would be a far more expensive warranty than doing my HG's. Also if your clutch is low it is a good time to get a clutch change...they should only charge about 1/2 hr time for it.

Yeah, the clutch is fairly new. I figure it is a good time to change the timing belt (80,000 miles) and at least take a look at the water pump to see if it is in good condition.

The WWP99 warranty extension only covers external seepage, it says it right in the letter you receive. Powetrain warranty only covers headgaskets 5/60.

DONE:
Here is the section of the letter you were sent that explains it is for external leaks only....

WARRANTY EXTENSION
If you have this Service Program repair performed promptly, Subaru will extend coverage under the Subaru Limited Warranty on your vehicle for cylinder head gasket external coolant leaks to a period of 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Warranty coverage begins on the date the vehicle was delivered to the first retail purchaser. If the vehicle was
used as a demonstrator or company vehicle before being sold at retail, warranty coverage begins on the date the vehicle was first placed in such service. As a further condition for this extended warranty coverage to apply, you must have Genuine Subaru Cooling System Conditioner added to your vehicle at any subsequent cooling system services at the interval specified in the Warranty and Maintenance Booklet under the heading “Schedule of Inspection and Maintenance Services”. Resulting damage caused by a lack of maintenance or low coolant level will not be covered.

Yeah, that is the issue. Apparently I had internal leakage leading to overheating. It was not do to lack of maintenance or anything like that, it just went out. Anyway, subaru is going the extra mile for me and replacing it, even though my issue is technically outside the boundaries to the warranty.

Kudos to Subaru!!!
