Default Tire Rack Performance #'s

Just a question about tirerack.com performance numbers. Are the numbers consistent between performance categories? i.e. is a 8.7 traction rating on a Hi Performance summer tire the same as an 8.7 rating on a Hi Performance A/S tire? Just a curiosity question as I am comparing tires.

TIA

~Watts

No. And they're all ratings by consumers. And maybe 1% of the consumers rating the tires are remotely qualified to do so. One person's 10 for traction is another person's 6. There are no standards for the ratings other than personal opinion.

If you want tire opinions, ask here and you can at least check the expertise of the person giving the opinion and judge accordingly.

Yes, it's very subjective...and quite dependent on what tires the user has run before. Still, I do believe they're useful for a general reference for pointing out general strengths and weaknesses, just no absolute, comparitive numbers.

For more real, comparitive data, use TireRack's professional tests to compare tires. These are at least pitted against each other in the same conditions at the same time(mostly). You can actually compare lap times and such. They're still a bit subjective when comparing between tests, i.e. one test is done on a different day with different conditions than another test. I assume there may be different drivers as well. Still, they're a lot better than the individual user reviews as far as actual numbers.

I use the user reviews and a basis of tire "character" or general behaviors. If a tire sucks in rain, a lot of people will mention it. If it's really noisy, a lot of people will mention it. If there's balance problems or poor build quality, a lot of people will complain. This is the type of info you can really extract from the user reviews, still very useful in its own way.

Or call Luke at TireRack. He has driven all of them and can give you a very objective comparison about the tires they sell. He helped me out and I am very pleased. You can also look at the reviews done by TireRack people and get a comparison that way.

Yea....I was talking about the performance numbers put up by tirerack.....most specifically this comparison between the Avon Tech 500 and the Avon Tech 550 A/S

It seems that the A/S out performs the summer oriented tire in all categories....and its cheaper!

Edit: just noticed that it says "customer review" at the heading...my bad.
