Question How long will a EJ22 engine last on average?

I'm looking at buying a 1998 Impreza L with the EJ22 engine in it. It has 141,000 miles on it. Should I buy it, I don't know what kind of "life expectancy" is of these engines are.

Thanks

i would suspect if you take good care of your engine it could go 250k.

So would it be safe to say that if I maintain it well it should last around another 100,000 miles?

Yep, I would definitely say go for it. If worse comes to worst, you could always search the boards for a replacement engine, but I wouldn't worry about it. The EJ22 is a work-horse. Enjoy the car.

my EJ22 has 172k.

Repairs: NONE, never! Yes, the EJ22 is a great engine, very bulletproof block.

Go for it, mine is still running great!

FWIW, i bought my 97 ej22 with 90k miles for 3800, and it's at 132k now. just had to replace cam and crank seals shortly after i bought it. haven't really had a problem with the engine since. i've changed both cv joints. i commute 60 miles a day, and it's showing no signs of stopping so far.

I don't think you will have any worries with the engine components. However, some areas that may creep up on you might be a wheel bearing, a crank seal, or cam seals. My '98 L 4EAT has been very reliable and I suspect it can easily see 250,000 miles.

There are some mileage threads on here if you perform a quick search. I remember reading about an Outback, maybe a '99, that a delivery service guy ran 500,000 miles without any serious repairs.

$3,800 seems like a fair price, I say go for it.

the cam seals from what I understand are not the greatest but they are an $80 fix at the dealer. just have it done, its a pain

yes I did have it done

The Outback is heavier and the Impreza is much lighter and feels quicker. I make faster turns in the Impreza.

I think your price is fair. But negotiate on AGE -- that is you are buying a 25 year old car. Don't tell the seller that we told you to go for it. Tell them you are afraid to spend too much on an old car or something like that and see if they sewaten the deal

LOL, did you realize that you are replying to a thread about a used car that may or may not have been purchased about 8 years ago
I would hope that the OP has made the decision to buy it or not by now
