Default Uh oh, CEL came on

I was driving up a hill earlier today, er, more of a mountain (yes, I was driving up a mountain), going up a steep grade, at WOT in my Legacy. As I was heading up the hill, there was a momentary loss in power, and my CEL came on and hasn't gone out since. Engine sounds the same, exhaust smells the same, coolant looks good (still green, just a little left in the res), oil lelve will be checked tomorrow morning. Still has power... Should I worry about this, or just drive it until there is a decent shop open on Tuesday?

Take it to an Autozone, and have them do a free scan. Get the code(s) in Pxxxx format and post them here. Then we will be able to help you.

I'm betting some sort of misfire code. Get it checked at an autozone. They will pull the code for you. Get back to us and let us know whats up.

A misfire code would be accompanied with a blinking CEL, which never happened. =\

I think that sometimes you might not notice the blinking. At WOT you are probably pretty intent on the road. I've had LOTS of misfire codes. Some of them I have seen the blink and others I haven't. It blinks then stops, so even if you "saw it come on" you may have just seen the last blink. I've done it before...

The CEL will flash only when a real-time misfire is being detected. A steady CEL could indicate a past misfire event that has set a code, but there is no way to tell without a scan.

^^^^ Yes the flashing is a real time misfire event. A static on can be it misfired a couple times then straightened out then misfired again a few minutes later. It will only flash if you are misfiring on that cylinder at every attempt to fire. My car is like Misfire Queen. ugh! OBDII scanner = 100 bucks at kragen.

cheers

I have driven this car before with only 3 plug wires in it, I know what a misfire looks like. There is no active misfire happening right now, and my ECU is very insensetive to misfires. When the plug wire wasn't connected, I noticed the absolute lack of power and the smell of unburned gasoline in the exhaust long before the CEL started flashing. Even then, the car would be misfiring 100% of the time, and the CEL only flashed maybe 5% of the time, and just stayed on the rest. If the car just misfired once, I doubt it would set a code.

I'm starting to suspect an O2, it's starting to guzzle gasoline quite a bit. No odd smell to the exhaust, or even any loss of power. A bad O2 may actually result in more power as the car runs more and more lean.

Could a damaged MAP sensor throw a code? I know it would throw a code if it isn't plugged in (and if it wasn't plugged in, then got plugged back in, it would reset that code rather quickly).
