Exhaust heat shielding...

I've ended up doing it to every Subaru I've owned (a BRAT, a Loyale RX, and and Impreza L) at one point or another (because of rattles) with no problems. I haven't touched the shields on the RS yet.

Can't really figure out if this goes here or not, but I don't know where else to put it.

Has anybody removed the heat sheilding surrounding the exhaust? I'm hunting to shed all the weight I can in a rally RS.

I removed it from the second cat back. It is not very heavy, a couple of pounds perhaps. The big piece over the muffler produced an irritating rattle with my Strohmung.

I removed it on my Legacy GT because of rattling. After lots of miles and road and rally racing I have had no troubles.

While I am trying to shave off every possible extra pound, the heat sheild is also in the way of stuff.

I did surgery on Saturday. Just get under the car with a 10mm and 9mm sockets and closed wrenches to unscrew everything. Then use a locking wrench to bend the lips on the edges of the heat shields to a 90° angle. Lastly, use a narrow pry bar to wedge apart the upper and lower portions of the heat shield. It's a pain in the ass to get started but once it starts splitting it takes about 2 minutes to pry off.

Make sure to jack the car up and use jackstands. Also, you'll be applying a lot of torque to the pipes to pry off the shields so be careful...don't want to bend anything. But yeah, I was sick of the rattles so I just yanked them off.

Maybe I'll wait til I upgrade the exhaust. Probably be easier to get the heat shielding off without the exhaust, right? I'm going to be doing some more work in a couple weeks, I'll take a look at it then.

The heat shield around the exhaust piping is there so that there is minimal heat radiating to the bottom part of the chassis. I don't know what type of material is covering the metal chassis, but the heat shields are there in order to protect that area from being "burnt to a crisp" (for lack of a better term). You can try removing the shields, but beware of what I told you if you smell something burning.

I took off just the shielding off by the Muffler when I had the cat back put on less rattle....have had it off since Apr 99 no probs.

It seems that several people have been running without it with no problems. What about using insulating exhaust tape? That would help contain the heat to withing the exhaust piping. Is it better to have the exhaust radiating heat? Would containing the heat cause poor flow?

I thought they sold exhaust header blankets. What you could do is maybe buy that and wrap that around the exhaust.

Stock 1997 Legacy GT sedan.

I have been removing heat shields since I bought this car a few weeks ago. It has "almost" stopped rattling. I started with the first 2 shields on the header pipes directly out of the engine since they were clearly rusted loose. That helped but I still had a rattle under moderate acceleration. I continued removing the longer shields on the 2 pipes before entering the Y junction. I also removed the shield that covers the Y junction. Now most all rattles are gone except for the rare rattle under moderate acceleration under load.

I'm reluctant to remove the shields on the resonator and cat conv for 2 reasons.

1. Once I am able to undo the fasteners and drop the bottom shield, will I be able to slip the top shield out between the exhaust and the body ?

2. Will the absence of these shields allow excessive heat to come in close contact with the body ?

Has anyone removed these 2 shields without trouble or concequence ?
