I moved up to 215/50R17's. At 120mph on the speedo means I'm really doing about 125-126mph. Kept on passing the older GS300 just last night.

You would be losing some torque to gain horse power.

umm, no.

you sacrifice torque for RPM (the wheel not the engine)

Yeah, but if you have the same amount of torque moving 15"s and then they have to move 16"s, technically wouldn't it make your car slower from the start? I guess I just don't understand your comment. Can you elaborate?

You wouldn't gain torque or horsepower moving to bigger wheels. Weight pushed aside, if you had a wheel that was 15" in diameter and a wheel that was 16" in diameter. It would be harder to move with the 16" wheel because you have to move an extra 3.14" in the same turn than with the 15" wheel. Its goin to take more torque to do that in the same amount of time was the 15" wheel.

The benefits of using a larger wheel with a smaller tire is that you can get better handling from it, you can enter and leave corners faster. But you can't accelerate as fast.

It's physics. A breaker bar is used to make twisting easier, more torque is applied from the same weight pushing down on the handle of the breaker bar. A tire with a larger diameter is harder to twist from the axle then, let's say a 10" diameter tire. The 10" diameter tire will spin a lot easier, but will not cover the same distance as my 25" diameter tire.

You do lose torque with a larger tire.

And horse power is energy being translated into speed. With a larger tire, you gain horse power.

I didn't make it up. Physics did.

BTW, I was talking about the overall tire size. Not rims size assuming all weight and dimension (except diameter) stays the same.
