Default 98 vs. 99-01 and motor q's

yeah, so i am in the market to be purchasing an impreza (2.5RS) and would like to know the pros and cons between getting the 98 or a 99-01!

i know the 98 has the DOHC motor and the rest have the SHOC, and from what i have gathered the DOHC is really strong and a lot better than the SOHC.

but then i see in one of the FAQ's that the SOHC is faster (0-60 anyway) and also see that the motors dont take to boost real well in there current configureation (see that switching to STI block was a very good solutiong....) but yeah, i havent decided what i want to do with the car yet, as far as motor build goes, i really want boost and know i will be feinding for it back in my life (my RX-7 TII is being sold right now so that i can get an impreza and i LOVE BOOST!) or build it up na.....if i decide to boost, what would be ur recomendations?? i dont mind doing extra work for better results (ie swap blocks vs. swap whole motor drive train) and LOVE to get dirty so it doesnt matter to me.....it seams swaping blocks would be the cheaper of the 2 as from what i gather to swap u need the motor, trans, dif. halfshafts and crossmember(i think i got them all.....)

also, what is this closed deck and what not talk i hear???

im so lost lol

thanx in advance for all thoes that helped!!!

dohc's are actually much more prone to head gasket failures,
sohc's have a point higher compression. 00's and 01s use a map vs the maf on 99's and 98's.
the cheapest solution for power, is a motor swap, let the engineers at subaru work out the details of how to reliably build a turbo motor... with much less (300) weight, and better gearing (shorter) a ej20t powered RS is pretty quick.

I have a friend with an EJ20t swap and it is bad ass. Or, you can just enjoy the car the way it is.

yeah, well i will be enjoying the car the way it is for quite some time as i will be building up my 89 240sx all motor KA drift car and use this as a fun as hell daily driver so, what would u guys recomend then, go with the 00-01 2.5RS then, and just throw on some bolt ons till i swap?? and what is the cost for a Ej20t swap?? also, would o be able to swap DOHC heads onto the SOHC block?? and wouldnt it be cheaper to just swap blocks?? i am an aspiering shop owner, so i would like to work out the details of how to reliably build a turbo myself!! i am not looking for the easy way out at all, i am looking for away to show my mechanical skills (like what im doing with my 240sx.......na built KA24DE-going as far as itb's to distributorless ignition, to tuning it myself with a stand alone!) so for thoes looking to recomend the easy way out not to sound like a dick but **** that!! lol

also, if i could get some comparisons, numbers AND experiance with all each option that would be AWSOME!!!

again, thanx guys, and i am looking into the swap also, not ruling it out, but it seems pretty expencive lol i just want to make sure i get as much info on each set up before making a desision!! also would like to hear some n/a builds going down with these motors

Not trying to take the easy way out here, but if you snoop around here, (This is a darker blue because I want you to click me) you should really find all the answers you are looking for, plus some you may have not noticed. It's just easier to search then to get new responses from people.
