Default Anybody replaced power steering pump on Legacy L?

I just obtained a power steering pump from a junkyard for my '97 Legacy L (only $50, not bad!).

I have the Haynes manual at home, but haven't looked at the info yet for this replacement. Any 'gotcha' items I should be aware of?

Thanks,
DDB

It should be pretty strait forward. Just watch the fluid. $50 is a good price. I wish more people would use junk yards. Or as i like to call them hiden treasures.

Did you buy it with the pulley attached or separated? If you have to replace the pulley, make sure you don't take off the PS belt until you undo the pulley nut. Unless you have a pulley spanner that can lock/hold the pulley in place, and depending how tight the wrench monkeys installed it and how corroded it is, it may be a beotch to get off. Leaving the belt on, allows you to hold tension on the pulley with the belt while you loosen the nut.

If your "hidden treasure" already has the pulley, just check it to make sure it doesn't have any dings, nicks or out-of-round surface area before you re-install it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. The PS pump came with the pulley attached. I don't think I'll be able to tackle this project until the middle of next week. I'll post an update then.

I finally got around to swapping out my old power steering pump for the one obtained at a junkyard recently. The process went fairly smoothly. I made a bit of a mess on my driveway with the old PS fluid, but not too bad.

Filled 'new' pump with Mobil1 synthetic ATF, bled the system per the instructions in the Haynes manual, and that was it. The old problem of rubbing/creaking noises when turning the wheel at slow speeds has disappeared.

Job took me a little over an hour, which probably means that anybody else could do it in 30 minutes (I'm the world's worst amateur mechanic).
