Talking (56k Friendly) Very rare in the legacy world...

Well i went ahead and did it. I am very pleased. I know that not many, if any other legacy guys on here have done this. These are just teasers, they still need clear coat (to match the center caps completely) and my car needs a bath really bad...

So without further ado...

You said clearcoat.... So what did you use? Duplicolor wheel paint or other? Looks sharp. Something only subie enthusiasts would know is not stock.

Thats pretty damn sweet. Ive wanted to paint my rims (WRX rims), and its come down to either black or gold. I think yours look a lot better in gold though!

Those look great... the snowflake wheel looks like a bear to paint. I've toyed with the idea of painting my WRX or 16x7 wheels gold, but I've been hesitant for fear of botching it.

Sweet job! My rims were a lighter shade of gold when I got them. It has since faded off. So there a little gold and a little silver. I was thinking about painting mine a gold also. I was wondering if you would give up the info.

Yeah mitch, definitely be able to see me now!

As for how i did it?

Well, about 25 dollars in paint supplies and a weekend of work with help and support from my friends made it all possible.

First, i sanded the wheels. Then i used a rustoleum automotive primer, followed by many layers of gold walmart brand paint. I thought that color was the best. Then i let it dry overnight. Coming back to it the next day, three wheels matched, and one did not. I ended up repainting all 4, giving it more layers on top of the dry paint. Then i dusted a clear coat to dull it a bit, and there you have it. I will be clearing the whole thing eventually when i have more time. It will give it a little more shine, but for now i like it dull.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

I am actually really intrested in how you sanded these wheels. I have the same ones and started to sand them. After sanding half a wheel I put the project on hold. Any special technique that you used? All the curves in the wheels are a pain to sand.

I just got some emery cloth from homedepot, the stuff for metal. It comes with a coarse, medium, and fine. All you need is the fine, but you need more than one. If you can find some in just fine, then you could save some money.

Basically all i did was sand them until the shiny went away. It wasnt hard, and it does not need to be perfect. It didnt take that long either. I had 4 people doing it, one for each wheel though, but it still was not hard. Just go in some sort of pattern so you dont miss any spots, and work off that clear coat. Then when your finished, make sure you clean the wheel good. Thats one thing i wish i did better, there are still a few peices of sanded wheel under the paint on the lip area. Not bad or anything...

If you have any more Q's let me know...

Looks great…

Aren’t those wheels available in Gold from Subaru? I thought some models of GT / LGT came with gold and others with silver?

Thanks man! The 30th aniversary wheels i believe are the ones you are talking about, but they are like half and half. The inside of the spokes or something have gold in them, but the rest are silver. I think thats how it is, never looked up close at one.

Oh and by the way, your car is my cars idol... Soon enough it will probably have a wrx transplant.

I had just photoshopped that exact idea on my LGT last week as an option to buying new rims. Great work.

I would definitely like to go for a ride! What part of MD are you from? Im in PA for school, used to live in Timonium. My dad lives in belair, and i have a lot of friends there too. My friend CJ was talking about meeting you recently. He drives a Green L with gold rims and 2.5l swap. He helped me paint these rims this weekend...
Will you be at subaru challenge? If so ill probably see you...
