Default do our diffs have vent tubes?

i'm gettting kinda tired of oil leaks..i keep blowing front diff seals. i've already changed one and now it's blown out and i think that the other one has now to. i" wondering now if there is a vent tube that might be plugged? i know that a lot of diffs have one but i havent seen one on mine. would a bad bearing do that? any advice would be nice

I don't know about the Subaru, but you are correct that most differential casings have a vent of some sort. A bad bearing can cause premature oil seal failure due to excessive shaft run-out. Also make sure to check the seal running surface on the shaft for wear/grooves.
Now, I'm not sure waht you mean by saying that the seal is 'blown out'. If you mean that the seal has actually come out of position, then the seal can be installed with some type of adhesive or retaining compound around the outside. Check with the Loctite website for what to use.

Cripes. I'm pretty sure the fill tube is the vent. I don't remember seeing any rubber on them.

When you install the next one you might try:
A. put some grease on the backside where the tension spring is to help keep that from popping off while you're smacking it in there.
B. Like jac04 said, try a non permanent sealant on the outside of the seal surface.
3. make sure you install it flush and even.

nope..just dumping oil out of them, namely at freeway speed. when pulling into a rest stop i get a nice oil on my exhaust smell, what is a good way to check the diff bearings? just shaft play? what amount would be alright? all the more reasons to get rid of my slushbox!!
