Default possible motor swaps for 2.2L 97 legacy

I think my motor is dying, almost sounds like rod knock. What motor can I swap in there, and what years should I be considering. I know this is a noob question, but I appreciate the help in advance.

WRX motor swap.

If your going to stay with the 2.2 look for 96-99 legacy L or LS.
Don't know if the 1995 legacy's had OBDII

If he's going to use a 2.2L, He'll either need a 1996 and newer 2.2, or he'll need the dual port exhaust header. The 1996 and newer 2.2's had a single exhaust port instead of dual like the 1995 and older 2.2's.

The 1995's were TECHNICALLY Obd2, but they're missing a whole bunch of the emissions controls in the gas tank that the 1998's and newer had.

Off the top of my head,

H4: EJ18, EJ22, EJ22T, EJ25 SOHC and DOHC
H4T: EJ20 (WRX), EJ25 (Forester, LGT, STI)
H6: EG27, EG33, and EZ30

WRT the EG27 and EG33 (Old XT and SVX engines respectively) they are essentially an H4 with two additional cylinders added and timing "belt" driven cams. The 3.3 is a real torque monster.

The EZ30 is significantly shorter (only ~.75 inch longer than an EJ block) with sealed timing "chain" driven cams. Would be an awesome fit into your L. Expect long hours sorting out the wiring though.

What makes you think it's rod knock? Have you checked your cam tensioner? Can sound like rod knock or valve train noise but not nearly the hassle. See this Article for more info. Although it refers to 1999-2000 models, it may still apply to your's if it's failing/failed. Is worth a check.

Dale
