Default What do you do with leftover junk parts ?

I am considering taking on a project that may involve swapping blocks or engines.

If I do swap out a good block for a bad block, what do I do with the old block ?

Is there always a core swap involved when you buy a used / new / or reconditioned block ?

If there is not a core swap do you take it to the city dump ?

aluminum + iron oxide = aluminum oxide + LOTS of heat! (somewhere around 3000 degrees Celsius.)

Clean it up and use it as a display piece, if you're in to that sort of thing. Or a mount for a coffee table.

Hey, Ferrari F1 and BMW and others sell cleaned up blocks as displays.... *shrug* So this one's Subaru, it'd still look cool.

You guys are feeding my underlying fear.

If I begin my new hobby of taking junkers and overhauling them.....I will end up with a small junk yard in my yard.

Surely there is someone out there who can give me advice on how best eradicate the built up junk at the lowest cost.....legally.

This is the kind of feedback I was looking for

Will a junk yard take (and pay for) any part regardless of the condition ? I was thinking that a Junk yard would possibly charge me to take parts, if the parts were "junk"

i'd call around to local metal scrapyards and see if they'll take it and how they'd pay. i know friends of mine have sold blocks(and in extreme cases, torn apart a car with a recip saw and trucked it to a scrapyard). they usually get a certain amount per pound of metal, which for the ej's wouldn't be alot, but at least it's something.

Funny you should bring this up. Just last night as we were working on the WRX swap I am doing, we counted 8 shortblocks on my garage floor and 6 sets of heads. But twice recently old tired blocks saved the day when good motors popped. A tired engine is better than no engine if you throw a rod or crater a piston.

Also, this WRX engine had a crushed oil pan and bent headers. And guess what I had in the corner? You can never have too many spares if you start building a bunch of Subaru engines.

And they often require cores if you buy a rebuild. If you get engines from CCR, they charge you like $800-1000 for core charge if you don't have one...
