Default Car starts then stalls, possible problems?

Hello, I just resently bought a 98' Legact GT, after my Dodge Neon was totaled. Earlier today when I went to start my car, it started and then it just stalled. Every time I would try to start it, it would just die. If I reved the gas it would run fine, but every time it went back down to idle, it would stall.

Anybody know what it could be? Possibly the MAS?

Any help would be great.

Do you have a warranty? Sounds like you need a diag check.

Likely AFS (air flow sensor), maybe O2 sensor.

But also check the airfilter to make sure it is not filthy (if you haven't already). I assume the battery is A-OK as it starts...

Good luck!

Sounds like a vacume hose is disconnected... Check all the hoses goin in to the big black intake tube. Check on the bottem of the intake tube there is a hose running near the pcv valve, it might be that hose. That did it for me.
hope that helps,

I second that, Iceman.

Make sure ALL your hoses are tight!!! If you have any air leaks, it will do it to ya. When in doubt, go to a nearby Lowes or Home depot, and get a copper fitting bracket. I think the diameter was about 1.5", and it's got ridges on both sides. put one on the hose, and other (jam it in HARD!) to the plasic area i.e. intake system. It got rid of the problem REAL quick.

Take the no cost options first, the diag checks next - for sure!

If the hoses are disconnected, the car wont' even rev at all. I had the big hose at the bottom of the intake tube disconnected, and the car would stall no matter if I press the throttle or not. The engine would make a really nasty noise before it went coma.

I would tend to think it's a clugged fuel filter. My friend's G20 had that problem before, stalled at idle then reved ok. Turn out it was a clugged fuel filter.

just my $0.02

Start simple, Jason is probably right - fuel filter.

my car did the exact same thing after I changed an air filter. Problem? that leetle hose behind the intake tube on the way into the torque chamber was loose. It would start, rev if asked, then die at idle.

Can't remember, did 98s have the film or hot wire MAF? It sounds like you're not getting any signal at all- in addition to all the recs above I would check the elec connection at the MAF, right after the filter box. Maybe something got loose? If you have the film type MAF, those have blown from time to time, so that's a possibility. Also just make sure you've got a solid connection betw. the last airbox (plastic plenum) and the throttle body, I think there's a big 4" hose clamp up there.

let us know how you make out!
