Default Not sure how I feel about this: Man handcuffs self to tree, body found 3 years later

It's kind of sad since he was mentally ill, but you're lying if you don't chuckle a little.

Artist's body found three years after forest death

Sep 21 2005

By Gareth Hughes Daily Post Staff

Richard Sumner, whose body was found three years after he disappeared

A TALENTED artist from Crosby, Liverpool died after handcuffing himself to a tree in a dense forest, an inquest heard yesterday.

Richard Sumner, 47, a schizophrenic, had done the same thing on three previous occasions before having second thoughts each time.

There was evidence that on the final occasion he had also struggled desperately to free himself, the hearing was told.

His skeleton, along with a pair of boots and only a few items of clothing, was found in April this year in Clocaenog forest near Ruthin in North Wales.

It was 200 yards into the remote woodland and was found by local resident Jennifer Houston, while she was out walking her dogs.

When Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers found the handcuffs attached to one of the hands it was immediately treated as a suspicious death.

Det Inspector Mike Gallienne told the inquest it could have been an escaped prisoner or a third party been involved.

But when Mr Sumner was identified through a key fob traced to his mother she told officers his death was no surprise as he had visited North Wales before with the intention of killing himself.

His sister, Patricia Jones, of Sale, Cheshire, said that only a week before he disappeared in March, 2002, he had gone to the same area, handcuffed himself to a tree but then managed to release himself because he didn't want to upset his family.

Mr Sumner was a scenic artist but in 1984 developed schizophrenia. As his illness deepened he had to give up work but was upset by having to rely on benefits.

"He hated to be thought of as a parasite," said Mrs Jones.

Det Inspector Gallienne said Mr Sumner had apparently first tried to kill himself in 1996 when he managed to free himself after being tied to a tree for four days. The second occasion was in 1999 and the third a week before he disappeared.

Dr Rodgers told Coroner John Hughes that as only skeletal remains were found it was impossible to give a cause of death or to say how long Mr Sumner had taken to die.

But he said the fact that the handcuff was quite high up his hand instead of around the wrist and that there were deep scuff marks on the tree made it clear he had tried hard to free himself.

Recording an open verdict, the coroner described it as "a curious state of affairs". "There is evidence that he may have changed his mind," he said.

"It is clear he was a very troubled man because of his schizophrenia, but there is not enough evidence of suicide, particularly in the absence of any cause of death."
CN: Man with schizophrenia handcuffs self to tree, changes mind, can't get unlocked, dies, body is found three years later.

Now while I normally do get big laughs out of hearing about mentally ill people committing suicide, I can't find the funny in this story. Can somebody explain it to me?

And it takes them 3 years to find a body? I don't think they really needed sherlock holmes on this one in order to figure it out a wee bit sooner. Unless his family were the ones that left him there to die and then played dumb.

Better yet, find a guy you want to kill. Take them to Mexico, tie them to a tree in Mexico, then come back here

If a man dies out in the woods, handcuffed to a tree, and no one is around to hear it, does he really......never mind....I guess we know the answer now.
