Default 2.2L owners who've done the snorkelectomy...

I pulled off the intake silencer/milk jug...thinggy from inside the fender and now i've got this horribly irritating hum coming from the airbox when i'm idling. it sounds like a vacuum cleaner and from what i've read so far, those with RS's or WRX's haven't had this problem.

is there any way to make the humming go away besides put the milk jug back on or get a cai? or am i just outta luck?

thanks.

It is interesting that you bring that up. I removed the silencer on my 98L many moons ago, no hum. My dad also has a 98L but its a 4 door, I pulled the silencer on that and it has that nasty hum. I have no clue why my car didnt hum. I think a cheap ebay aftermarket intake will get rid of it.

hmm. well if i can't figure out something before i do the impreza's conversion to winter form for the season, i'll just put the milk jug back on. i don't really want an intake in the sense of a pipe with a mushroom filter cause i'm told that getting rid of the plastic boxes or "air reservoirs" as they're properly called, changes your torque band. plus i already spent $60 on a green filter.

thanks for the response though.

Depends on the type of intake, but some of the MAF 2.2's do that yes.

if you want to get rid of that ugly hum, you want the 96 intake tract, the 97 up had ahorrible set up with several resonator tubes and that giant box above the throttle body, i also used some dynomat in the fender well to quite the intake down. Hope this helps

A buddy's '98 RS had this humming sound. We replaced the stock box between the MAF and TB with a '96 Legacy piece and it took away a lot of the humming. The only other part that hummms is from the MAF. The way it's designed it humms. My '99 MAF doesn't hummmm. I have a '93 Impreza intake pipe; the one between MAF and TB and I have also took out the jug in the fender.
