Legacy Install Day??? Need Help Installing Suspension ...And Motorcycle For Sale...

Hey everyone. I just bought some KYB GR-2's for my 97 Legacy GT sedan. I just need to buy some springs and I'm ready to install them. I can't wait!

Is anyone doing an install day any time soon, or would anyone be willing to help me install them?

I want to help, but I have never done this before. I did a quick search and didn't see anything about an install day... I'd be totally willing to buy chilled beverages or pay someone for the help. I live on the eastside (of Seattle)... Thanks in advance for your help!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I'm selling a totally clean (never dropped, raced, or stunted) 2002 Yamaha YZF-R6, if anyone is interested. This baby is fun, and oh so FAST!!! I'm just moving on to a diferent toy (Dual Sport) so I need to sell this... I will miss it.

We do install days over here at AHOC quite frequently. . . just never really publicize it.

I hope you're not planning on dropping your Legacy on those GR2s, though . . .they're not intended for drops. If you're going to drop it, I'd suggest trading those in on a set of AGXs before you get springs.

Install should be easy on your car. Basics. You won't even need a spring compressor. It would be nice if you have a air compressor though, but you can as easly do it with a torque bar or open end and close end wrench technique.

You will need 10mm 12mm 14mm 17mm 19mm (18mm and 21mm possible) and a hex key set for the strut top. I forget what exact size is the lower shock bolts use. So I put the 17/18mm. Could even be a 14mm. Remove brake lines on shock assembly using 12mm. 2 Bolts on the bottom. (17,18 or even 14mm)
3 14mm bolts on top. Drop who shock assembly down and out. Use a hex key on top and a closed end wrench, turn in opposite directions, loosen only till the bolt is about to come off. Then put a tire against the top of the hex key and point the bottom of the shock away from anything. Use the open end of the wrench and turn slowly until shock pops. I won't be a big pop. Subaru does not compress their springs as much as Honda's do. Make sure remember how the parts come apart. Reinsert your new spring and place washers.. etc in the same order it came out. Place your top hat back on and press down and install 14mm bolt on top. Use your hex key again and tighten down. Reinstall the shock the same way you took it out. Bolt the top bolts first, not tight. Then pull up the brake assembly and line up the bolt holes. If its hard, you can just use a stock jack and jack up the control arm till the holes match. Replace bolts. One bolt will have a weird shape, it will not fit the other hole so don't try to force it in, mostlikely its for the other hole. Tighten the rest of your bolts and brake lines. Double check your work. Replace wheel. X patern 80ftlbs. Retighten your top strut w/ hex key and 14mm. This applies for the front. The rear is the same almost, except with less bolts and on the brakes you need a needle nose or something loosen the brake clip. But once you've done the front, it's easier to do the rears. IF you have problems, PM me, I can possibly come your way, I work in Bellevue.

Hope that helps. Some details might not be exact but it relates very closely.

Thanks for the heads up on dropping the car. I don't want to drop it much. I would be happy with stock height or just slightly below stock (I like the slightly lowered look, but not slammed). Someone was going to sell me some H&R's, but that would drop it about 1.25". Would it be bad to drop it 1.25" on the GR-2's?!

4banginRex - Sent you an email. Thanks for the info!

Good write-up. But to note, Subarus do not have 18mm heads, although they may fit well on the 17mm heads (I found that out the hard way in my young and stupid days).

In a whole other note, I would not condone taking the the top nut off any assembled strut/spring without a compressor (or god forbid the conventional rope & twist tactic ), regardless if the spring tension isn't great enough to do anything. Especially for someone who is not familar with the install.

One of the G1 legacy guys contacted KYB about spring rates and such, and they said that the GR-2's are not designed to hold up to any kind of drop. He said that even with the AGX's, they wouldn't recommend more than a 2" drop(based on spring rates available for the G1 legacy) You may be able to find something the prove contrary, but I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed in your investment in AGX's. They're amazing struts.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I have decided to go for the Whiteline Control springs. Now, does anyone know of a good local place that carries them, or do I need to order them on-line? They are on backorder at Boxer4Racing, GlobalPerformance, and PDM-Racing.com... and I was hoping to get them for this weekend. Looks like I may be waiting...
