Impreza GC8 Speedometer trouble

Heyas, been awhile since I have poked around here

I'm having speedometer trouble. It fluctuates a lot, always below my real speed, kinda odd.

Any idea what causes this, and how I can fix it?

MY98 2.5RS, stock.

Yep, speed sensor(s)

I have a CEL with the following codes:

P1540 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction 2
P0500 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction

(one of these has to do with idle speed)

*sigh* So where is the speed sensor? Anyone ever replaced one?

Side of the tranny - easier to get to from underneath.

I think the 98s had a two wire sensor - 85082AC012

Clever wording.

I have had mine die momentarily and come back. Sometimes not long enough to throw a code, sometimes it did. I noticed it was often water related, and sometimes work-related (that is, I'd made a commotion under the hood before the issue with the speedo.) Last time I was in there I wiggled the connector at the tranny and pressed it in. Hasn't messed up since.

I'd check the connection. Make sure it's clean, fully clipped in. Trace the harness to see if there is a wire rubbing through the loom and become exposed / shorted. Mine is on the passenger side of the tranny but I doubt it's the same from model to model.

Maybe you'll get lucky and it's just a quick fix like that.
