Default Got roof rack need help!

Ok I have a sport wagon and I need to put on the roof rack I just bought from another member. Now the rails that are currently on there , do they have to come fully off and another shroter set put in. i wanted to try to see another impreza outback in town and see how they have that installed. If the rail is two pieces including the rack rails and the rails that go down to the front windshield. Hopefully I have made this clear. Any help would be great thanks! Josh

Any rack you bought for your car should just bolt on to the factory rails.

If you have a rack with feet, then you bought the wrong kind.

Its a factory rack off a 95 impreza. yes it will bolt right on but the previous owner showed me from pictures that yes the strip coming from the windshield is cut right where the rack mounts. I need to go to the dealer and maybe buy one of the strips and see exactly how long it is, then cut min to match.

The drip rail strip is one piece from the hood to the front of the rack. Then the rack fills in the drip rail to the back. The old rack comes off by undoing 4 screws on each side. They are located under little plastic tabs on the rails. Good luck with those!
If you got JDM style longitudinal rails to go on, they mount to the same brackets on the roof. You will need new drip rail strips to fill in the space between the front and rear rail. You can only buy the whole piece from Subaru that go from the hood to the hatch and it is $$$.

Do you have any photos (off from regular digital camera, or from camera phone, etc) to explain a little bit more detail?

yeah I could try that. I'll be able to get pictures soon.
Any impreza outback owners if you wouldn't mind checking to see how the roof rack goes together and if you know the part # for the drip rail that is shorter if you have the roof rack that would be greatly appreciated.

Ohh and I went to the Subaru dealer to check if they knew the part and its the same dumb dude from like years before that I've seen there,,,,, he knows nothing and all he does is parts. I don't know about you, but if you're in parts you should know alot about the parts especially if its the only brand you do. Am I right? It just seems to me that I could do a better job than this guy. whatever I'm just blabbering from frustration. thanks guys, keep it coming if you have more info

I don't know if this helps, but the roof racks and rails have changed over the years for the same model car. I found out recently that the roof rails for an 05 Outback are not the same as an 05 Legacy. It's possible that the rails you are trying to install will not fit. According to your profile, you own a 2000MY, correct? I am going to see if they are the same as a 1995 MY....BRB

yeah i think the roof rack was off a 95 wagon, which will fit because the parts from as far back as 93 will fit on as late as a 2001. I just need to determine if there is a part # at subaru for the shorter roof drip rails, that lead into the roof rack. I saw another ouback impreza the other night and I was trying to see if I could tell where the roof rack either overlapped the drip rail or where it connected. From what I could see, it just seems to overlap somewhere.

You can just cut your drip rail trim. Hack saw it to the correct length. They only sell the full length ones at the stealership.
Caution: The OBS racks are LOUDDDD!!!! I recommend NOT installing them and buy a Thule or Yakima.
Does your friend have the short drip trim still? Use those and keep yours intact until you try the rack.
I have a set of the short pieces in my garage, but I am far far away.
