Default Phillips HID conversion kit on '06 WRX

Anyone install one of these yet on an '06? Thinking about having it done. Would order it from xenondepot.com and have it installed by professionals. Comments/suggestions? Thanks in advance...

I have the NX's 8500k HID Kit on my car and they look NICE!.. I compared with stock 04 STI and Stock 03 Evo's ( Projectors ) HIDs and they look like cheap $50 Xenon wanna be lights.. My friend has the exact same HID as mine on his bug eye JDM Projector headlights and they look even better...

Some might say it's not worth getting the HID but IMO it is worth it...

I can see better at night time. I come from a car that sits low and had regular headlights , which was really hard to see at night time.. I had to check if the light was on sometimes.

Well , if you ever get one do a full search and people's comment on the HID you are getting. SOmetime they look cheap. Get 8500k

I'm actually looking at 4300k cause they have the best light output. I favor brighter light over a bluer color. I just feel guilty cause the car is brand new and the projector lights on the '06 are quite good. For $379 + install I would hope that the phillips kit is worth it.

If you do go with an HID aftermarket kit, getting one with Philips components is a good choice. I've had mine for almost two years now and they're still going strong. And good idea with going with 4300K - I see you've done your research. Kudos to you

Post some pics of the beam pattern against a wall if you do wind up getting them. I'd like to see the light output of an aftermarket HID kit in the WRX halogen projector setup.

I actually ordered mine on the 28th (phillips 4300k gen 4 slim ballasts). They're still in transit but I'll be sure to post up my impressions. -Gene

...good man.

Also, don't forget that the cut off shield of the projector is what actually creats the "blue-ish" light that so many people are looking for. A properly setup 4300 bulb in a projector will actually have a bluer appearance than a 8000 degree bulb. Even better, the light output of the 4300 bulb will be a hundred times better.

UPDATE:

Hey Guys,

I just installed my 4300K HID kit the other day. The bulbs that came with the kit fit into the stock holes (two H1 holes) fine BUT they make the bulbs are pointed WAY up. My stock high beams do NOTHING because the bulbs are aimed so high.

Problem. Just tonight I was driving and my passenger side HID started to flicker and my brake light and ABS light came on. They won't go away... I'm not sure if the kit fried my ballast or whatever but I'll have to go and check it out tomorrow.

Their customer service has been, OK so far. They've returned some of my e-mails but they havn't replied to two of them so hopefully they pull through tomorrow. I'll keep you guys updated on xenondepot.com but as of now, I'd recommend not buying things from them until my little problem clears out. -Gene

that guy who recommended the 8000k bulbs has NO idea what he's talking about, but i'm sure you guys knew that if you're considering the phillips.

AK*WRX... i've heard people complain about their legacy gt's when using the h7 kit and that they've had to aim the headlights WAY down. are you using them in projectors or just in stock '04 housings?

AK*WRX*2004 - did you disable your DRLs from behind the glovebox? If not, that could very well be the reason your HIDs are flickering.

yes

I have the stock housing... I looked into the projectors but they would've cost me over $950 w/out shipping + there's about a week downtime...

Yes I did. I had some HID's before these and disabled them long ago. -Gene

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh... DIY...

the DIY retrofit of 7-series projectors in to my old civic didn't cost anywhere near that much WITH another set of oem headlights. ebay + diy is the way to go on those.

**UPDATE**

Ordered my Philips 4300k H7 kit today from xenonking.com instead of xenondepot.com. The customer service at xenonking is far superior plus the kit was $5 cheaper ($374) and shipping was free. I have an appt. for installation on the 22nd. Can't wait.

I prefer the Philips unit for a $100 more just for piece of mind. Xenonking also sells the Mcculloch for around $280 shipped.

I'm looking into putting in a new set of HID projectors myself. does anyone happen to have pics of the stock 06 2.5i/WRX halogen projector. If not i'll just take the headlight apart myself when I have time to find out what it looks like.

The ideal thing to do would be to buy a set of OEM Hella ballasts and ignitors such as the ones found on audi's and bmw's. however, that requires the use of relays to avoid frying the stock harness when the bulbs are warming up., which can be a pain in the ass to wire in. So i'm probably just going to go with a philips kit cause they're designed for stock wiring. Then i'll find HID projectors on ebay that are the same design as the stock halogen projectors and go from there.

I haven't seen info on the '06s yet, but for the '02-'05 WRXs, the main DRL module is located behind the glovebox. Here are some pics of where it is:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=843079

*Edit - the '06 DRL unit is in the same location as the pics show in the above thread.

Here's a recent thread where an '06 STi owner disabled the DRL unit:

folks, for h7 projectors, why go with "kits" when you can get OEM equipment for nearly the same price and better availability.

rebased bulb kits usually arent made as well as oem.

h7 is a very popular bulb base for projectors. like the valeo proejctors, all you need is an h7->d2s adapter

then you can use any OEM bulbs, and ballasts.
BMW, SUBARU/Nissan etc... plus its much easier to get OEM d2s bulbs than aftermarket rebased bulbs.

a pair of d2s costs 75 dollars

BRAND NEW ballasts AND bulbs are 300 bux
d2s adapters are at most 15-20 dollars.

ask sean @
hidtech.com

hell, i'd drive up there and install it for you

Darn. I wish I knew about this a little while back and I did do a lot of research. Oh well...I'll try the Philips H7 kit and if there are any problems (crossing fingers) I will go the above route. Thanks buddy...
