Default My Ebay score! JDM HID's.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=8003927941

I bought these directly from the company just a matter of hours ago... The guy didn't mention that they were H.I.D.s, but has confirmed that the back does read ! warning H.I.D. or whatever....

I got a really good deal, and they closed the auction. Still waiting on the stuff to come in, obviously, since I just bought.

BUT, the ballasts are missing, what ballast do I need? I know I've read Nissan, but which ones? Any Nissan ballast?

Can anyone tell me the value of these lights? I assume I got a great deal, but without ballasts I don't know...

Just excited as I have wanted these lights since 01!

i just bought ballasts from a 2003 maxima and they work great...i think some of the jdm sti hid lights came with the same ballasts...you need to do a little of splicing, but it's not bad at all...oh and you should also get a bosch relay and wire it up with this setup (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ness+schematic)...the factory wiring is only suffice for halogen lights and won't work well with hids...i found it out the hard way by buying all new ballasts cuz i thought mine were bad...turns out the wiring was just bad...it sucked haha

The proper ballast for those lights are the original ones that came with them. The fact that they are missing may be why the lights were so cheap. Due to the lights having an integral ignitor they are not directly compatible with standard ballasts, if you can't get the proper ones (which you probably can't, they are almost impossible to find by themselves) the lights will have to be modified to accept available ballasts.
edit- as you can see from the post above you aren't the only one in this situation.
Also did the lights include the bulbs? If not you need to get a set of D2S HID bulbs, they are about $100 retail apiece but can be sourced online for considerably less.
Finally the JDMs should not be used on US roads unless you modify the beam pattern to eliminate the rise to the left which glares into oncoming traffic, this requires taking the lights apart.

great buy but the one pictured on the left looks like it has a crack on it.

i hope that its just lighting that makes it seem like that. even if they dont come with ballast, modifying them for HIDs will still be cheaper than spending 800-1000 for them.

http://faqlight.carpassion.info/hl-hid-ballasts.htm

Reading on this site, is says that the ballasts (Philips LVQ-212 L300) Have a built in ignitor. So this is bad I'm guessing.

Will they work though, I mean, with wiring/splicing/etc. Will they work? I know "They won't be as good as OEM ballasts, I should have gotten those, etc"
But for the fact that I've got $500 in a set of these lights, I don't think a little labor would be trouble.

Also does anyone know the exact colors for the headlight wiring on an 02 WRX? Im running without 9007 connectors. I can wire more up, but I've just been plugging using standard radio shack wire connectors directly on to the 9007 bulb.

Also found this site- this is the exact ballast that I've bought. This shows detailed pictures of the connectors/ballast/etc.

yes, you need ballasts that do not have the built in igniters. i have heard that many of the nissan/infinity ballasts do not have them. maybe check around the posts that have come up in the past or e-mail some people that have done it already and have working lights.
i'm in your puddle, i have a set of JDM hid's coming. the first thing i am doing is getting a wiring harness from George Davies (Wagons_ho). He can suppossedly make one for the HID setup with all the correct plugs. Many people on here have used them before, so i'm willing to trust in that for now.

Not sure about the salt chamber, but it's been working great on my lights for 3 years, removed the clips and no rust, no water in the assemb., and best of all, the replacement lights have worked great.

Now, I'm not excited or proud that I'm using those connectors, but hey, I was stupid for putting alot higher bulbs in that burnt the harness. I just never replaced the 9007 connector.

Got them in last night.
First of all, I must say, that I was shocked. Once the E-check cleared, I had them 2 days later! When I opened the package, I noticed that the lights were extremely perfect. No blemish or crack or scratches ANYWHERE. All HID lighting was included except the ballast. The lights are just AWESOME. That's all I can say really. Real Black Chrome JDM HID lights....

sorry to bump an old thread, but Stu, I agree 100%.

After much research and confused moments, my friend and I wired up the H.I.D. lights last night..

Anyone who says "The proper ballast for those lights are the original ones that came with them. " needs to do a little more research themselves before stating that only the OEM ballasts will work. Here's the truth.

The bulbs used in the OEM JDM STi lights are Philips bulbs. They DO have a socket on the back of the bulb, which is actually a Philips socket. The ignitor, however, is in the housing of the lights- No big deal. After speaking to Philips DIRECTLY, they stated that the Philips LVQ-212 L300 is the recommended ballast judging by the part number on the bulb. I explained about the built in ignitor and he said the only reason for having it in the assembly is that you can mount the ballast further away from the assembly.

So, it's CONFIRMED that the Subaru ballast is NOT the one designed directly for these lights. Sure, it's designed for the assembly w/built in ignitor, but the part number on the bulbs, directly from philips, are directly compatible with Philips LVQ-212 L300. These can be had from ANY 2002-2003 Nissan with OEM H.I.D.s. for cheap.. I paid $75 for 2, shipped, including weather boxes... Please note that this ballast is also marketed under the Hella name as their Gen. 3 ballast. All that you have to do is IGNORE the haters... here's how you do it:

bypass the built in ignitor, You should have 3 wires with a triangle connector, possibly in orange wire loom. Avoid this entire line. Instead, drill a small hole in the rear dust cap and wire directly to your Philips/Hella ballast. On the back of the bulb is the socket (black with an orange sticker on it), just snip the wires as far away from the socket as possible. You will have 1 thick wire, and 2 smaller wires, a green and a gray if I remember correctly... Well, the 2 smaller wires do nothing but connect to the outer ring of the bulb, so you can tie these together. I can finish in complete details and take some pictures if needed, but from there it's simple wiring of the ballast. I also put in heavy duty relays and in line fuse holders behind both headlights. This is indeed a premiuim set-up, and I'd be hard pressed to see how it's any different or inferior to the OEM setup.

Special thanks to my buddy Steven as well, with his home filled with nothing but radio shack parts, and his years of electronics tinkering, we made this a wonderful investment.

In short, if you run across the JDM HID's that are an absolute bargain due to the fact of no ballasts, BUY THEM IMMEDIATELY. I have $610 after shipping in this ENTIRE setup. Once again these are black chrome HID's with Philips bulbs, philips ballasts, relays, upgraded wiring, JDM wiring switch and best of all, it ALL works wonderfully.
If there is any way I can help for the people who want to know how to use a NON oem ballast, pm me.

No hatin' here-
Good work getting them together. I'll add some comments-
The D2S/D2R bulbs are not ballast-specific, they will in fact work with any OEM HID setup whether it uses external ignitors or not. The connectors and electrical specs are the same for either.
My post refers to those looking for a plug-and-play solution to get these lights working without the original ballasts. Many people have purchased them unaware of the fact that you can't just buy any standard ballast and plug it in. Obviously you were able to deal with this and modify the lights to make the Phillips ballasts work.
