I want to add a power outlet to the cargo area of my WRX wagon, and I know that this was a standard feature on OBS's. Can someone get me measurements/and or photos of where this plug is located? I know it's near the cargo area light, but I'd like a reasonably precise idea of where before I go chopping up my interior panels in search of the harness.

This should help you find the light location at least. Plug you need should be on the same harness. Failing that, just tap into the light wires and hardwire that sucker.

I already have a trunk light . . . and there's suppsoed to be a harness there already for the power outlet. I'm just wondering whether the power outlet is supposed to be above, below, or beside the trunk light.

BUMP - anyone with an '02-'04 OBS? I've got a pic from an '01 OBS, just wanted to check if the outlet is in the same place (about 1" below the trunk light).

PM me your e-mail and I'll send you a pic of mine. I only had a minute and didn't have a tape measure on hand but it's more than 1" below the light.

Bumped from the days of yore . . .

I actually did this mod, and it works - kind of. Only problem is that I tend to run an inverter back there (175W), and the inverter gives me a low-power warning whenever I use it (whether the car is on or not). Could it be that the wiring for the cargo area light can't handle any significant extra load? If not, I'm not sure what else I can tap for power back there (or what the OBS uses).

You got the right answer, the wiring can not handle the extra load required by the inverter.
One option will be to run a 12 awg wire from the battery itself to the outlet.
