Default please help, purple wire under dash disconnected

Hi Guys,

I'm new here and to Subaru ownership. I just picked up a 2001 outback yesterday. It broke down last night and we had to call out the NRMA, fortunately it was just a dead battery and we where back up and running in no time.

Had a good look over the car today though and have found a purple wire unplugged under the dash.

when i plug it in, the engine light stays on when the engine is started. when unplugged, engine light operates normally (goes off after starting the car).

The car seems great other than that but its really got me worried. Can anyone tell me what the purple wire is for?

it's probably a diagnostic connector (the WRX has a couple of them, too)
