Question WTB: 1997 or Newer: Legacy, Legacy Outback, Forester, etc....WAGON! Opinions??

That's right, the wife and I are looking for something 97 or newer, we want a wagon, mileage is negotiable upon inspection.

We'd like a Legacy wagon (Outback will do, but normal Legacy Wagon is preferred) or Forester. Good condition inside and out.

Price: lower than ~7k

Ideas? Personal sellers? Dealerships? Anyone got one for sale?

Seattle area only please.

Thanks,

Aaron

Head gasket. Make sure it's been done if not your lookin at anywhere from 1500 to 2000 maybe more for the job. It depends on what state the engine is in They are great cars aside from the Headgasket issue.

Could you enlighten me further on the 'head gasket issue'? Is this a known issue? Links on Nabisco?

When does it "need" to be done, what kind of mileage are we looking at? Things like that.....

Ask anyone on Nasioc who has a DOHC 2.5 It's happened. Mine happened at around 59k some around 45k some around 50k some as late as 75 to 80k. If it isn't documented that it hasn't been done then re think that car. Once its done its done. Suabru re engineered the headgaskets after they found the problem so the new ones hold up very well. Just be aware. Do a search in the NA forum and also the Legacy forum for all of this. It's there. I ain't gonna do the searching for you.

Thank you sir. I had no idea.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone have any other ideas such as where to go, who's got one FS, etc?

Oh, was it only the 97's? If so, I can look for another year. I knew about the power thing, but wasn't aware of the HG issues.

Do 99's have an issue?

I'm not affiliated with the seller.
Also not sure if it's a wagon or sedan.

All of the 99 Legacy's had dohc motors so yes they still had the problem. Ej22 mototrs did not have the problems that ej25 motors did. at least not all of them.I would look at a 2000 Legacy.

I would look for a 2000, however, I don't believe I'll find one within the pricerange I'm looking for.

So, does this go for the EJ25's in the 2.5 RS's as well?

True, I don't think you would find one that is not beat within your budget.

Yep. Any 2.5L up until 2000 (pretty sure, but I think there may be some late year 99s not included) will be at risk of HG failure.

Mine didn't completely fail. When I had to have valves re-done it was discovered that they had started. This wasn't until ~120K. So, mine made it further than most. But they seem to ALL go sooner or later.

good luck

Jared
