Default Engine died at high speed on the freeway- almost got rear ended by a semi

Around 9:40pm crusing at 75MPH accelerating into the express lane (car pool) my engine failed on me. It almost felt like I ran out of gas going 80 MPH when the tank is 3/4 full. No matter how much I pump the gas pedal, it felt like there are no gas feeding the engine and eventually the engine died and the gauge light lit around 50mph. To make it worse, I was a lane short of the shoulder on the side of the freeway. I was so close of getting rear ended by a 18 wheeler the auto dimming feature in my STi had no effect on the intensity of the 18 wheeler's incoming head lights. My passengers and I literally saw the 18 wheeler's cargo tiptoed while it is swearving ou of the way. The engine would start and die right away when the RPM needle drops no matter how many times I try to start the engine.

To make long story short, my STI was towed to my Subaru dealership in Lake Forest. The service technician called me in the morning and informed me that besides engine didn't catch on the first start, everything was running fine after the second start. There wwas no reported error code by the computer and nothing is damaged during visual inspection. I decide to leave it with them for another day or two for safety reason.

I thought I post this problem on NASIOC to see if anyone ever experienced the same problem and if any experienced Subaru owners can shed some light on what could of happened.. Any help or participation would help. I was fortunate that nothing happened to me and 3 other passengers in my car.

Brief description on the condition of my car:

2004 STI
37,xxx miles
Complete scheduled service.

Do you remember going thru a puddle or anything shortly before it happened? Do you have a cold air intake? I have a car in the shop that the same thing happened to and it turned out he went thru a BIG puddle, car died. Pulled over, checked everything out, got back in the car and it started. Ran crappy for a little while and then evened out. Two weeks later the car was towed to the shop because it died again and wouldn't restart. Right before it died the oil light came on. Then there was a loud bang.....Rod thru the block because the engine hydro-locked.

My WRX died last night, but it restarted immediately once I pulled over. Im pretty sure it was because of my HKS BOV.

Have you had stereo work or other electrical work done? It might sound simple but sometimes the posts get left lose..and will cause it to die or not restart. Had that happen. As the post's have covers that drop on them the tech might forget cuse they are recovered.

With a community full of guys who love to mod their cars, we need to know if yours is stock. Any mods at all? Intake, blowoff valve?

Yep,

I had a 05 STi come in with identical symptoms and it was a slightly loose pos cable.

I think he might have done some stereo work if you look at his last post from August. Looks like you all are onto something!

the drive by wire is very sensitive to voltage and connections. the above suggestions are on the right track.

I did have a brand new car on the lot do this, the gas pedal sensor went on the fritz and the drive by wire wouldn't work at all. but it would idle fine all day. just you could floor it and nothing would really happen, it would rev very slow.

You could have gotten a bit of boost creep and overboosted, in which case the ECU would cut fuel and lead to exactly what you experienced.

Just a guess. But didn't they change the hot side of the VF39 during the 04 year production?

This happened to me two or three times before. Turns out my knee was hitting the key and turning the car off!

Matt - good point! I heard (on another board) about someone that had a load of keys on their keyring and it caused the vehicle to have a stalling out problem. Never any codes, etc. The dealer could never duplicate the problem. It turns out that when the guy was dropping off his car, he was just leaving the one car key. Then, it died on the road. The dealer went out to pick it up and found the load of keys on the key chain. Once the guy kept his car key on one ring with his house key (keeping the load of other keys he had on another ring), the problem never happened again.
