Have a Nice Day? Advice Gurus - Making a noise, and not a commonly diagnosed type noise? I'm stumped.

Alright, coming from someone who's done 3 Subbie motor installs a tranny install and countless work on other friends Subbies I'm officially stumped.

Roll back the clock and it's a week ago. Friday night and I'm headed on a road trip Saturday morning from Houston to Dallas. A normal 3 hour drive. Hadn't changed the plugs on my Subbie for in awhile so figured before the road trip would be a good idea. Just stating this incase anyone maybe had a sound occuring from a plug install or something. This is the 4th set of new plugs for my Subbie so don't think so.

When I'm pulling into Dallas on Saturday I'm rolling next to a concrete barrier and now that I've rolled down the windows I hear a weird noise. ONLY when at like 5-10% throttle at about 3500-3750rpm and only with a load on the engine. Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak but don't think so. What it does sound like is, very similiar to like an old Ford 302 or nicely built 350 with the rockers outta adjustment or valve lash. A clicking noise also scarely familiar to a rod knocking but only ALOT quiter. Well if I'm just idling parked I can rev the motor and no noise. But driving slowly at a low partial throttle next to a building or something you can here the noise. Damn I can't figure it out. Anyway, but the car on the lift this weekend and checked my equal length header and this seemed to be tight but re-torqued everything just incase. Still have the sound.

I'm Stumped, Guru

P.S. Car is still running EXACTLY the same, boost levels, temp, feels strong...everything.

Talking about that, did it pull nicely once we were in 2nd gear? I know you had 2 people with you but I also had the back loaded down with about 150lb of mechanic tools/car jack/car stands.

I read about this on another board this week. According to them, subaru's are well know for their noisy lifters. Mine does it too.

Well my car now has 98k on it but on it's 2nd motor. First one till 60k this one is approaching 40k. It's never made this noise until now, actually it's been whisper quite. I mean it makes a little more valvetrain noise than a normal car but wouldn't consider the sound clicking like now.

is it louder if there is a barrier on the left or right?

I'm gonna send you a PM, cause if it is what I think it is, I don't want you to be embarrased on the 2.0 forum for something as stupid as what I think it is

I say pull the exhaust gaskets (depending on what header you run , there could be 3, 4, 5 or 6 gaskets to check)... don't just re-torque them. If damage was done to them from being loose, re-torquing wont help. A hole could be small enough to not effect spool-up, but still produce the noise.

I say check the tires for rocks or nails in them.
It's usually ALWAYS something as simple as that. Or check to see if all the plugs are secure in the firewall. Noise from the engine sounds odd through those holes.

Already replied to your PM but no. I've shut the car off and coasted at speed to see if I could hear anything like drivetrain, tire related and no sound with the motor off. Sound does seem to be coming more from the driver side.

Got 108,xxxmi on mine and about 15,xxxmi ago I started getting rod knock. 1st gear knocks all the way through and all the rest will knock at around 2900-4000 rpms. Still strong as ever and no problems with it.(Just has to last long enough to get the stroker.)

What kind of BOV do you have? Is it possible that it could be failing? Maybe chatterting under low boost?

i don't really have near as much knowledge as you guru, but to me it kinda sounds like it could be in the valve area. lifters or such. i've heard hondas go from the slightest click occasionally to all out rattle fest in a few months and the fix was tightening and re gapping the lifters.

By chance, on your 2nd motor, did you reuse your orginal heads. If so, did you check valve lifter to cam lobe clearance? If not, you could have one or several lifters out of spec = noisy, clapping lifters.

Well it's a long story, but at 62k my first motor went. Put in a long block and 18 HOURS later KABOOM! Turned out it had a bad timing belt or I installed something wrong. The motor came from a very reputable source but then again I've done 20+ motor installs including some very pricey Pro Drag motors so always check/torque everything. So anyway, now motor #2 is down and I get a shortblock, motor #3. Well this was installed with the heads off of motor #1 since longblock motor #2's heads had piston slap.

I didn't check the lifters though. Well motor #3 is the one in my car now and has almost 40k miles. If the lifters were out of spec shouldn't it have made that noise right off the bat? Also for the post about the crank rods, well motor #1 had a crank bearing go so plenty of rod knock and this noise doesn't sound that loud so hopefully it's valvetrain related. Could just be that the valvetrain is no creeping up on 100k. Time for Cobb stage 3 valvetrain.

The lifters get worn and that's why they need to be checked for proper clearance. I beleive Subaru states to check the valve clearance at 60k miles. When I had my heads rebuilt, I checked each lifter several times because I couldn't believe how off they were
(29k hard miles). I ordered new shims and that was that. I think now they're probably tighter than they were from Subaru (it's been said that they come some what inconsistent right from the factory).

i don't know how similar the subaru valvetrains are compared to the hondas, but in my crx there were nuts on top of the lifters that had loosened over years of abuse. when i pulled the valve cover, i could move the nuts with 1 finger. also, slightly overfilling the oil would quiet them for a little in the early stages.

Check your valve clearance. It's got to be off at your mileage. If so measure what size shims are needed for each valve and order them.
I once did this to my old taurus sho and it takes a while, but well worth it.

The noise is coming from your spark plugs. You need to torque them down to spec. I had this exact same noise and it drove me batshit trying to figure it out. I even replaced the timing belt and tensioner and did a leakdown test trying to solve it.
