Default Most harm that can be done by knowing IP address?

I was wondering what the most malicious thing you could do to someone by knowing their IP? Not that I plan on doing anything , but I run a msg. board and some people are concerned with moderators knowing their IP.

I always thought there wasn't much that could be done, but I'm not definitely sure.

Thoughts?

The most harm? Complete and total destruction of any data/files/etc on that computer as well as any computers that can be accessed from that computer.

Hey, you asked.

Complete pwnage of the PC, assuming an unpatched/poorly patched windows box and no firewall. With a stealth takeover, complete takeover of bank accounts, credit cards, paypal, etc...

If they don't want moderators to know their real IP, they should always access the site via a proxy.

Cool, thanks. And how hard (easy?) is it to do, assuming a poorly patched and non-firewalled PC?

Assuming a poorly patched and non-firewalled PC, it already happened within 6 minutes of it being connected to the internet.

Its the first step to doing anything you want, if you so desire.

In reality, most people who know other's IP's, don't give it a second thought.

For Example you can look up nasioc.com on publicly assessable websites and find out all sorts of useful information such as who owns the website, their mailing address, what type of OS the website is run on, and what patch level that system is at.

From there you can do other things if you wish, but most people wouldn't or couldn't even find that information let alone do anything with it.

What is the worst that can happen?

You can get a TON of personal information from an IP in my position here, if I was a mod here and had a grudge against somebody, I could plug in their IP here at work, get just about every piece of knowledge you could ever want on them through my connections with banks/CC issuers/cable providers/credit report places, the FBI like the below...

start with IP, that gets you a cable/internet provider/city/town/zip/address, address gets you name, name gets your credit, credit gets you accounts on the net, they will get you SSN, then it is just a matter of finding mother's maiden name, and some frivolous items before I am owning an STi, home, several CCs, and a few bank loans in the name of BAM.

But overall I would say nothing MAJOR could come from it
