Default New to area

Well, I just drove in 3300 miles from North Carolina yesterday and am one of the newest residents to the Bay area.

Looks like I gotta get a smog check for my car before I get it registered, should I be worried. Does the legacy need some kind of component before it can pass emmissions?

Any other words of wisdom for a new resident?

Welcome!

You're lucky you moved here now. A year or two ago CA DMV charged out of state cars a huge 'smog fee' to register, but I believe it's been declared illegal. The car does have to have all the stock smog equipment on it that came from the factory. They do a visual inspection in addition to the tail-pipe check. The car's pretty new so it should be fine. Good luck!

Oh yea, you can also ask for a pre-inspection. They go through all the motions but don't send the results to DMV. You'll have to pay a fee ($25 maybe) but if you are really worried it could be worth it the first time. Once DMV flags a car as smog illegal it is a real pain.

If you smoke, I hope you brought a carton of luckies because it's really expensive out here! Seriously, regarding your smog, make sure your engine is nice and warmed up and if they won't take you right away and make you shut your engine off and wait, go elsewhere. Catalytic converters only work when it's hot. Welcome to CA. It's HOT in where you are but it's a dry heat!

I'm originally from Raleigh but I have lived in Charlotte for the past seven years. I'm glad to finally be here and cant wait for all my furniture and belongings to be delivered. The weather is beaurtiful as far as I can tell, it was 100 but not like Im used to 100 feeling like. Love the dry heat a lot.

Is it just me or are people really friendly around here?

You think it's friendly around here? I think CA are pretty rude for the most part. Nor-Cal is better than So-Cal. Glad you've not run into that and get jaded. The guys on the board are pretty friendly.

NorCal is better than SoCal? Camon, what kinda closed minded Bay Area elitest BS is that. Please spare me. I don't even to much like it here. Not a suitable beach for miles. Rains to much. To cold in the winter. So one. The point is this is all my opinion. I will not try to convince you that SoCal is better because for you it may not be. So don't be trying to pass your opinion/experices of as fact.

Personally, I hate California. The beaches are amazing, but that's about it. On the whole, I think the people here are rude and self-centered. You won't find much Southern Hospitality here.

Example A:

Got in a car accident on Friday night because I was waiting for someone to pull out of a parking spot, meanwhile someone rear-ends me.

What does the person who was pulling out of the spot do? Drive off, of course! As they were leaving, my girlfriend heard the passenger say, "Do you think we should stop, we saw the whole thing..." That wouldn't have happened in Asheville.

Example B: Highway 101. 'Nuff said.

Can't wait to leave.

Hey Deliciousspeed if you hate it so much here, why are you here? You seem a little tightly wound for someone from Socal. Maybe if you weren't so defensive you'd meet some nicer people

Aww poo-pooh, I feel soooo sorry for you guys.

Silicon Valley - good place to work, BAD place to live.

Southern California - the fruit looks good, but it's really just made of plastic.

San Francisco - not bad, but everybody is pissed off at each other.

Vancouver - BAD place to work, decent place to live.

Raleigh - may be just peachy, but I'd always be afraid of finding a burning cross in my front yard.

Holy crap, Sam, you got in ANOTHER accident? Dayam... maybe you oughta take off the big target you have stickered onto the hatch eh?

Homerjay...do you know me %#**%^! ? Cause I don't know you. You make a statement about all the people of an area I'm from, where a large part of my family lives, and you expect me to be what calm, take your insults in stride? Is that how you would take it if I did the same. Keep in mind I made no bad comment about people in the Bay Area. I wouldn't generalize like that. That much like racism is for the weak.

"Told you Skeisenb A$$holes whereever you go!
Hey Deliciousspeed if you hate it so much here, why are you here? You seem a little tightly wound for someone from Socal. Maybe if you weren't so defensive you'd meet some nicer people."

Why am I here, her name is Ellen. A wonderful woman and my wife. married for two years living here for 4. Not that it is any of your farking business. Nicer people like who, you? And I have meet a lot of people from this board alone that are pretty damn cool. Andy Joo, Alex S, Hein, Gagan, Chad, AJ, Daniel, Dan_E, Steve, Andy Inman, Miles, Idjit, So on so forth sorry to any I left out. You are the only a$$ hole I see here. You think you are better than some one else...what does that make you? You are exactly the type of person Idjit says he can't stand. Totally self involed, no concern or consideration for any one around you. Idjit is a cool guy, shame you are driving him from cali. Ask anyone who I have meet, I am a cool guy really laid back, love to laugh, love to drive, hate people who waste my time, slow me down, don't do their share, or are stupid! And you are stupid. Biast bastard. All I said was I don't like the weather or traffic and lack of options when one route is backed up. And you attact me!

And why is it that I could drive from Long Beach to Downtown LA during rush hour in 35 min (40+ miles) but it takes 1.5 hours to get to San Jose at 8pm? Traffic in LA bad...only if you don't know where the hell you are going or how to get there.

Oh, don't even get me started on the women here... Yes, they may look good - but it pretty much stops there.

I got pretty lucky, my awesome girlfriend is from the desert, comes from a working-class family, and has a good perspective on life. I was really surprised to find someone like her out here.

Southern women... Oh lordy, don't get me started. I really miss Southern Women. You haven't live until you've had someone call you "sugar" in bed.

LOL!!

Heh. What I meant is... She's not a "So Cal" chick, or a "No Cal" chick, she's from some place kind of weird... Definitely part of her pesonality. She acts a lot like a Southern chick, imho. That's a definite compliment - she's intelligent, creative, knows what she wants and how to get it, sweet as pie but a b|tch when it's appropriate, always ready for a roll in the hay, etc. etc. I love her to death!

She's totally supportive of my love of my car, my racing, my work, everything... She rules!

I moved out here from Dallas, about 5 years ago (No, I'm not from Dallas, just lived there for 9 years….8 years and 10 months too many ….but still have family that lives there) and fell in love with Cali at first site. Trust me, I lived in Europe and traveled all over for couple of years, then on to Canada (Toronto for 10 years) , Texas and finally ended up here in SF, which to me it's one of the coolest cities/places I've lived so far (Beside Madrid, Spain)
However, I imported my girlfriend (Full Irish blood from Dublin, Ireland ) from Dallas out here…(We moved out here together) and so far we both enjoy where we at.
Yes..yes.. there are so many things to say about any place you live in…but it boils down to what you make of it and who’s there to share it with you at the end of the day!!

Well, that was my two cents.. and I know no one asked for it. Although I’m not as active as most of you guys in this forum…however, enjoy reading most of the postings and love the fact that friendly, knowledgeable, supportive, experienced, unselfish…. guys and gals are here to lend a hand any time any day.

Cheers,
Reza

My wife is wonderful. She is pinay, from the Peans . But been here since she was 10. She is the most wonderful woman I have ever meet. She makes it ok to be here even though I have to ware a jacket in the farking summer so often. Never even wore jackets in the winter in LA.

Reza you are right man, it all comes down to who you are with where ever you go. I can remember a trip me and my mom took to the Grand Canyon years ago...that is the most boring place in the world. But growing up I didn't see my mom much, and thus I had a great time. Especially remembering it, really special to me.
BTW my mom lives in Dallas right now . She hates it.
