Question Hydra/Nemesis 2.17r1 help for a n00b

Just got my Hydra in last week. Great product. Got it installed with the stock turbo over the weekend. VF-34 just got in today, will put in tonight or tomorrow night. Anyway, car runs fine with a VF-30 base map and the stock turbo. Issue I have is that Nemesis crashes on me when I access Select->Settings (was headed there to calibrate WB O2 sensor). A new window flashes for a split second, my Dell with WinXP plays the sound for a critical stop and Nemsis completely shuts down. Using COM5 with IO Gear USB to serial adapter. Downloading maps works fine, all sensor readings (TPS, coolant temp, etc) work fine through the serial port. I use COM5 all the time for terminal emulation software (HyperTerminal, SecureCRT) as I am a network engineer by trade. Never any palm stuff or other crap through the port.

I tried to re-install. Phil even sent me the installation executable by e-mail. Same thing. I set Nemesis up on my Compaq workstation (Win2000 Professional) and hauled it out to the garage. Exact same symptoms on the WS. I have never used the COM port for anything on the WS. It's a built in serial port. Anyone run into this issue? Anyone running 2.17r1 without this problem? If so what OS, and patches?

I'm also planning on checking back with Phil tomorrow.

Oh yeah, I checked with Phil that the HW and firmware revs of the Hydra Match the Nemesis.

Anyway, help for a n00b...

I've had trouble with IO gear in the past. I switched to keyspan and never had any issues.

Thanks for the response... yeah, I first suspected the IO Gear... if it was the IO Gear though, I wouldn't have seen the issue on my PC (has a classic serial port). At this point, if this issue had happened to any number of people, it would more than likely be known on this forum. Phil had never seen it either... Must be a freak unit or something...???

Funny, I would say exactly the opposite.

We'll see... I should have a Hydra here within the next week. I'll try to remember to report back with what worked or not between the two adapters.

It could be but every unit is powered up and reprogrammed by me personally. In this process the unit is online and I have to go into the "settings" to setup the correct pass code. If there was a universal problem you would think I would catch it during this process but hey stranger things have happened.

I'll contact Hydra EMS later in the day to see if they've experienced this. You can also post here: http://www.hydraems.com/forums/ where you may get a quicker answer from one of the moderators.

Thanks,
Phil

Thanks Phil... did not get time to call today as a customer had network problems and I was busy with them all day (and still am). I guess about three possibilities exist...

1) something on my laptop that was also installed on my PC was causing problem.
2) damage during shipping
3) an issue specific to my car

I have a new PC that I am going to do a fresh install of the OS. If I have only the OS and Nemesis, no possibility of a software conflict should exist. To test #3 I need someone in SoCal to volunteer their WRX for a few hours. I'll check with my buddy, lives in Santa Monica.

I am going to guess #1. Let us know how the fresh PC does.

Yeah... just need some time... Well, no one has answered the original question... is anyone successfully running Nemesis 2.17r1? If so, what OS (Win98, WinXP, Win2000, etc...)? What service packs?

I'll keep everyone updated. VF-34 is installed. Was a bit hard but not a bad as some would make it out to be. Going to fire it up in about an hour with the 18.5 PSI/VF-30 base map and ease into it. New turbo needs a few hundred miles break in anyway...

Tomorrow (today?... Sunday) I will be doing some tuning with the new software on a new car, I'll post back if I have any issues. I've been using the 2.1V7 and V11 software without any issues on my car.

It better work, but I just opened some maps and didn't have any issues. Haven't tried it on the new car yet because we're still building the wiring harness

I'm running Win2000 with service pack 4 on it.

I can confirm 100% that it is an issue with the laptop.

I installed my Hydra today, tried configuring it with a Gateway laptop, using a PCMCIA Serial adapter (on COM4), and the program crashed trying to enter the settings. Also, if i opened the AFR Target map, it was completely flat, set to 14.7 afr for all boost settings - i knew this couldnt be correct.

So I grabbed a panasonic toughbook i had at the shop (has an intgegrated serial port), and the program worked flawlessly. Using the integral serial port, I could now see my AFR map, which was not a static 14.7:1.

So it seems, that on some serial adapters, not all of the map settings from the ecu are being uploaded to the computer.

On a side note, I was blown away at how simple it was to install and use the hydra, I was driving my car down the road in about 1 hour after I started the install. Only a few minor issues to address regarding the idle / startup, but neither issues are big enough to make the car unreliable.

EDIT: Was using 2.17r1 software, ECU was built in October 2005 (newest model), both laptops had WinXP on them.

Just to follow up... I've been using my Hydra with an IOGear USB-to-serial adapter with no issues for the past couple of weeks.

Maybe I'll try out my Keyspan adapter if I get bored.

I've tuned a dozen or so 2.17 flashed units lately without any issues and I also use a no name brand USB-Serial adaptor. I use a Dell Inspiron 1150 running Window XP for tuning in case that helps.

Good luck!

I had a strange issue with the software where it would not upload the map, however would show sensor data. If you tried to go into the settings menu it would just shut down. Did not do it on the desktop machine.

Had to restore the laptop. Installed the Hydra software program again and everything works great. Wierd.

I emailed you a copy of the software in case your exe is corrupted. I have heard of people having problems when they change the directory the Nemesis software installs in. Use all default download and folder locations to be safe.

Thanks,
Phil

Agreed. The Hydra Nemesis software does not seem to like being redirected to a different path when you install it (at least 2.14v11 doesn't). I made that mistake the first time through and it didn't work well at all until I removed it and reinstalled it to the default path. (I don't recall exactly what didn't work right, but I just remember that it didn't behave properly.)

Agreed. If you change the default directory that the installer uses, you can't launch the program. It's an installer bug. If I just left it alone all was well.

USB works fine with the 17 software for me, and I'm running on a Mac!!

bump.

...tried out my old Keyspan adapter (USA-19QW) with the Hydra and it didn't work. When uploading a map from the Hydra, the status bar would get about halfway, then stop.

I went back to my IOGear adapter (GUC232A), and everything worked normally.

I'm having a similar problem as the original guy. I have a unit I just recieved today with software 2.14v11. I'm getting a message that says 'version information check failed' when I try to connect to it. Has anyone run into this issue?

Are the newest boxes backwards compatable with the previous software (I was told that I had a v2.5 box w/ the reduced start time ect ect) but then told the most recent version is v2.17... .so idk.. I can't reach anyone on the phone so i thought i'd ask... thanks.

No the units are not backwards compatable, you must run the appropriate software for the flash that is on the Hydra Nemesis as there are new features. Was your unit not provided with a CD containing the appropriate software?

Email me your serial number and I can tell you which flash your unit contains.

Thanks,
Phil
