Default are legacies rattle traps too?

I've owned a forester and now a wrx and both were prone to the occasional highway rattle & hum. I know the impreza is the cheap end of the line, but was wondering if the high end subie platform had it any better in this department? Never had the pleasure of riding in the legacy platform.

driving at highway speeds is great. at lower speeds, i've got pillow ball mounts clunking and what i think are sticky sway bar endlinks creaking. but still pretty quiet for a 4 1/2 year old car with 44k miles.

we have a upper mount also making noise on the right rear after hanging the car up on 3 wheels on a steep driveway... i've had it checked but no fault was found, although the sound persists

My Legacy GT wagon was quiet as a mouse, except for the liftgate which would creak audibly when the body flexed in really hard corners. My WRX wagon is just as quiet, though.

My 93 wagon creaks a little bit, but i've got some really high rate springs on my coilovers, stiff Kumho tires, strut tower braces and all that.

At speed, the car is all but silent.

My 1998 Legacy L Wagon rattled like crazy, the windows were loose, something under the dash rattled on low speed bumps, the tailgate wouldn't close tight.

Then one day I noticed that the sub-frame below the engine had been replaced, I did a little more looking and sure enough, the whole damn front end of the car had been replaced. I'm sure the whole car had just been knocked loose from whatever hit it took.

After my dealer (Bloomington Acura Subaru) wouldn't do anything about it, (since it wasn't marked on the title, the had no legal obligation to tell me the car had been severely damaged.) I traded it in for a 1999 Impreza L Wagon from another dealer, and it's much much better.

What really pissed me off was that I bought an extended warranty from them, which doesn't cover damage from accidents, and they didn't tell me the car had been in an accident. Then, when I wanted the cam belt looked at (tensioner was making noise), they said it probably wouldn't be covered by my extended warranty since the cam belt cover had a crack in it from the accident. I'm still waiting for a refund from that stupid warranty.

ahhh... the fun of buying used cars....

My outback creaks horribly.

I have never heard a car make so much noise.

(Probably due to offroad abuse)

Mine was nice and quiet until I put on the STi top mounts and my DMS Golds started going south. The combined effect created some beautiful rattles in my dashboard, a little buzz in the driver side door or B-pillar, etc. It all appears to be gone now that the stock suspension is back on the car. It will be interesting to see what happens when the STi mounts and new/repaired Golds go back on the car.

I have this insanely annoying rattle directly
behind the center dash vents, sort of a metallic
clanking. It goes away when the cup holder is out.

That's a good thought, froggert. I have a Primitive Enterprises strut tower brace from the '99 but I've never gotten around to putting it on the '97. I'll do that when I get the suspension back from DMS.

Oh, and I occasionally have the annoying cup-holder buzz too. Mine's not metallic, though, it's just a buzz/vibration of the plastic pieces hitting each other.

geez, marc
you've got buckled floorboards from some of your adventures, if it just creaks you're lucky

I had a nasty rattle in the rear hatch, that went away when i installed the 12" in the back and rattled the hell out of everything.......go figure; the only other rattle/whatever i have is when the windows aren't totally down or up and i slam the dor, but that's subies for ya: my parents VDC still does the window rattle

just get a decent sound system; the only rattles you'll hear will be caused by bass

if it's any comparison, my last car was a camry, and my OB is much quieter, even after 4 years and 85k..........

I'm hoping a rear strut tower brace will fix some of the creaking and rattling. I'll get one eventually.

I get an occational 'thunk' comming somewhere in the vicinity of the trunk when driving fast over speed bumps, that I dont think should be there... not exactly sure what it is though...

Other than that I would say that the body structure is fairly tight, and I am not aware of anything really bad.

Sometimes if I have a little loose change (either in the coin slots or the ash tray), I will get an annoying rattle, and think to myself "Geeze what is that ?", but thats my fault, not the cars.

One rattle that I had was in the center console while driving across MI at 2 AM. Anytime I would go above 80 mph it would rattle, then after driving through all of the Chicago land toll booths and emptying out all the spare chance the mysterious rattle just stopped.
I guess you dont think of stupid stuff like that at 2 A.M.

My Legacy is nearly 10 years old, and still has no rattles or creaks. There is a little wind noise around the windows at high speeds.

My Legacy is about a year old now, and I get a screaming noise from my passengers when I go too fast.
