Default TurboXS stage 2 chip?

Should i get this. It's a turboxs unichip. It says it will give me great horsepower with a turboback exhaust( which i have). Should i get it for 100 bucks( is it worth it, will i notice any difference?)

I had a TXS unichip before the Utec was available. It had a kick above 60% throttle response in stage1 and a little more in stage2 (93 octane tune). It was not as smooth at low rpm as the Utec, but that didn't matter much to me then.

It's an all or nothing kind of feeling. Some people like that kind of feeling. Hopefully, you are in a State with 93 octane, and it has a 93 octane tune on it. Otherwise, you might have find a reflasher, or use an octane booster of some type to be on the safe side.

Make sure it comes with the little adjustable boost control bleeder valve, and that you have a boost gauge.

It should feel pretty good.

The old TXS dynamometer charts from 2001 showed about 300 crank Hp IIRC relative to 232 crank. The AWD HP for the stocker was about 168 on that dynamometer. The bleeder should be set for 16 psi at 4000 rpm in 4th gear. That will be about 16.5 in 5th at 4000 rpm and 15.5 at 4000 in 3rd. Do this testing on a high speed road and make the adjustments after pulling off at exits. If the program is for 93 octane use good gas like Shell V power, or what you intend to use. Use a new stock air filter. Avoid highly oxygenated gas since you are using the stock injectors and pump. "Winter" gas can be problematic if the tune is based on old-time good 93 octane summer gas. If necessary boost octane and energy per gallon with toluene or xylene. Beware detonation, especially in the winter when the air gets colder. That's what I remember from those early unichip days. Don't forget to do a "proper" ecu reset before your psi testing and adjusting.

If this is a TXS unichip setup it should be on a TXS plug and play circuit board with the mounting hardware to attach it above the stock ecu. No cutting or splicing is needed.

There are newer approaches which are nice, though they cost more than $100.

I have no experience with the stock ecu re-programming approaches, but lots of folks have gone for those simple approaches. The cheapest one might cost you about $300 with the ECUTEC at about $700. Some have opted for stand alone engine management for even higher $. Waiting in the wings is full disclosure of the stock ecu programming and really cheap access.

However, I was surprised to see that there is a NASIOC vendor with a complete line of wrx staged kits that use the unichip. Follow the link below.

Present Unichip staged kits.

This post is just a neutral information post. My opinion long ago settled on the first UTEC model through stages 2 and 3.

All of the TXS stuff I bought will be used on an engine upgrade I have planned, so the UTEC will have a second life.
