Default Tranny weakness and quarter mile times

Hi all, I just recently purchased a 2002 WRX wagon with a vishnu stage 2 kit. The seller said the car made 250whp (I will dyno myself to check a/f and what kinda power it makes, in a week or so). I have 2 questions though:

1) I keep hearing about the trannies on the WRX being weak, but have they ever broken under load or is it always between shifts? I shift slow and ease back on the gas. Just wanna make sure I am being nice to the car cuase I want it to last.

2) What kinda 1/4 mile times should the wagon run with the vishnu stage 2 (and 250 whp, this is what I was told it makes)? it is a 5 speed.

oh, and I got a CEL last night. Previous owner says it is due to EGT temps (He told me before I bought the car)

Thanks for the help, and all I can say is I love this car, from the sound, ride quality, power, looks, etc.

IF you are having a CEL due to an EGT issue wouldnt it throw your car into limp mode?

Don't know about a wagon, but you should be in the high 12's low 13's with a Vishnu stage II.

Most of the time, transmissions fail due to shock load (and inexperienced drivers), there have been people who's trannys have held up to 400whp, and others who broke them while bone stock. It's all about how you treat it. Check these links out for more info on how to treat your tranny:

As far as your 1/4 mile times... keep in mind that these cars are not meant for drag racing, so try not to abuse it.... but you should probably be able to run somewhere in the high 12's once you learn to launch it. Can't really say based on power level though, as no 2 dynos read the same, while one might say 250whp, another might say 300whp (even though that would be a FAR stretch for a VF30/34 car). Check out Vishnu's website for their approximate claims:

Hope that helped, enjoy your new car man.

Yeah it did. I figured that is why most trannies break (hard shifts, and shifting under WOT). Cool I feel a little better now. I was scared it was going to break when just going WOT in second or third gear. I know it is not made for drag, I just was wondering how it compares power wise compared to other cars (and for me it is easiest to compare 1/4 times). I actually fell in love with this car when I drove my friends to tahoe (just couldn't afford one at the time).

Weak trannies are a farce

Original tranny here:

3 years of performance rally. nearly 0 street time. all racing.

it is all in how you drive the car.

but in a rally, isnt there a little less strain on the tranny as everything is loos rock or dirt?

it'd be a bit different when applying those forces onto hard pavement where the tires will stick better...

i dunno what i'm talking about.

well... perhaps it is a little less stressful.

but dont tell Pat Richard that
there was a time (canada team) he blew through a tranny a rally...

again, it's all in how you drive it car

believe me, if i wanted to? i could shatter my gearbox on any given day.

Cool, thanks for the help. Any idea how long a stock clutch will last with 250whp? Also what mods would I need to reach 300whp? (I already have the Vishnu stage 2, really don't want there stage 3 500hp kit)
