Default Idle Control System Malfunction? Help Please!

I took insurance off of my wrx and I washed it up nice before I put it in the garage for the winter. I pulled it out of the garage and turned it off so that I could wash it. No problems. I washed the car and did nothing out of the ordinary. I start the car up and it starts up fine. I pulled the car into the garage and got out. The car was not idling for more than two minutes when I noticed the idle change and heard rpm drop. It then sounded a bit rougher than normal.

I didn't think much of it and kept doing what I was doing. At about three minutes I climbed in and gave it a few slow revs up to about 2-3k. It didn't seem right, very steppy not smooth.

when I let it come back down to idle it would not settle. The rpms were extremely low then raised up above 2k and back down. This is when I relized The cel was on... great.

I plugged in the AP and got a 1507 code "Idle control system malfunction (fail-safe)" Awesome!

So, I searched a little and I ran accross a free data logging program for our cars.
http://www.tari.co.za/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl
I don't know how to log anything yet but using the live function I could see that the maf is fully functioning, af ratios are correct, and a few other things.

I think it is the idle air control valve. Someone on nasioc had extremely similar symptoms on a NA subaru. He found his iac valve all gunked up so he cleaned it out and his problems were gone.

Could this be my problem? Where is the idle air control valve on a ej20t? What other things could cause my problems?

Thanks for the help,

Shawn

Well,
I cleaned the iacv and everything according to that link and my problem is still here. I cleared all codes and reset the ecu also.

Any other ideas?

Does your problem sound anything like mine? What have they replaced so far?

Anyone with any input, please help.

mine would only happen when the car was hot and in stop and go traffic. They replaced the IAC, then repaired a wire that was intermitent. It got worse before it got better; after first repair it would idle high after a short 5 minute ride and a 10 minute sit in the parking lot.

this thread worries me. i too am getting rough idle right now (you can hear it sputtering and stuff, and it can idle anywhere from 500-1400 rpms, and sometimes bounces around). i havent tried to clean my iac but i do throw the code every now and then. do you also find hesitation under throttle and occasional cuts in power (maybe because its in fail-safe mode?)?

i planned on just replacing the iac valve completely, because i've heard that cleaning it doesn't always get the job done. 35k on my motor right now roughly.

what other things has the dealer replaced and/or fixed for you? anyone had success?

I have 86K on mine and the iacv was extremely dirty. Is it true that it may take a period of driving before the iacvs works correctly again? I wouldn't think so since I cleared and reset the ecu. Whatever...

I still have the problem.

I still have not found or fixed my p1507 code. While in the process of troubleshooting I recieved three more codes! P0103 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input,P0108 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input, and P0112 Intake Air Temperature Circuit Low Input. All of this is on top of my original P1507 Idle control system malfunction (fail-safe).

What the hell is going on? I'm currently driving a 91 camry that has had less problems through out its entire life than my 02 wrx has had in a month. My "Subaru's are reliable" idea is starting to fade.

I 'think' I've just gotten rid of my P1507, but I haven't tested extensively. However, my overarching problem still persists. My idle is fluctuating.

I just reinstalled my engine and it initially idled terribly. I found one major intake leak which I fixed and also realized that I throttle cable was well out of adjustment; fixed that as well. So for now, code has gone away. I'll check again tomorrow. Unfortunately, weird idle hasn't.

I've ordered the gasket and plan to clean my IACV iaw this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=781242

We'll see how it goes.
