Default Help me with problem after UTEC install!!!

I installed my UTEC in my 03' wrx saturday morning and then went that afternoon to my local subaru performance shop and got it tuned for my exact mods. I have a Top-speed downpipe, Apex-i WS Catback and a k&n flat panel filter so they were adjusting the stage 2 map for those mods.
Turns out they werent able to get rid of a flat spot or slight hesitation at around 3k-low 5k rpms but anywhere above 5500k rpm..it pulls very hard. They said it was something they have never really seen before. they had to even run it so lean..like 13% or somthing like that for it to be tuned the best. They normally run that lean on stage 4 but not too often on stage 2 they said. The A/F ratio was great but they said the problem would more than likely be fixed with a new fuel pump, filter, and spark plugs. Which they want another $300 for installed. Im in college right now and it was a stretch even getting the utec and the tune...so what i want to know is if I get these new parts(fuel pump, filter, and spark plugs), will that illiminate the flat spot/hesitation ?????? I dont want to replace those and then that not fix the problem..although they are probably good to replace anyway. Please if you could give me or input, i would really appreciate it. thanks alot, -Mike

did you have this "flat spot" before the tune?? in other words, if it was a spark plug or fuel filter issue, it would be present before you went to get tuned. . .highly doubt it's a fuel pump issue.

sounds like a crossover issue IMHO. Who is the tuner?

Are you still using the 4.2c firmware? The new 5 firmware seems to have eliminated the hesitation for lots of people, including me.

Also the new firmware has some great new features. They are all detailed in the new 5 manual http://www.turboxs.com/downloads/UTE...nual%205.0.pdf

There are some crossover settings in there, as well as WGS settings, temperature compensation for fuel/timing and it will auto tweak the map upon detecting knock until the UTEC is reset.

IMHO load up the new v5 firmware, the new stage 1-3 parameters file and the new stage 2 map. They maps are tuned for 93 octane gas and run quite rich for safety. If you run 93 or 94 i'm sure you can lean out the fuel and advance the timing a bit, but of course your tuner can do this with proper AFR data.

The tuner is PRE (Performance Race Engineering) in Portland, OR. Before the utec was installed i had no flat spot, and after the utec was installed I had a really significant flat spot...but at that time the boost was fairly low. After adjusting the boost up more to where it should be, the hesitation was still there but was getting better. After the tune, the hesitation is still there(not as significant as before) at the lower rpm's, but power is phenomenol at the higher rpm's.

4.2c ran like poo for me, I had the transition problems. With 5 it's perfect.

Also, do a number 1 log and post it here then we can see what's going on.

well, if the flatspot wasn't there before the UTEC, then you've found your prob. I don't know much about the UTEC, so maybe try what the other poster said.

So if I download the version 5 on there, do I need to have the car tuned again or will the tune I just had done still be there and the new software just fix the hesitation? Sorry if that was a dumb question, im pretty new to the utec. Also I havnt even hooked up my computer to the utec...the shop is the only one who has down any tuning so I dont have a number 1 log at this point. Im going to call up PRE tomorrow and explain to them what you guys have told me and see what they have to say.

It definitely seems to be your crossover point which is typically set to 25%. You can try to play with that, or post a log (#1) and maybe we can see whats happening. I have been tuning out that exact same hesitation and it can be very tricky. Lots of gurus on here that can help. Oh, and version 5 is better than version 4.2. So save your maps and parameters and update the new version. Good luck.

If you need help hooking up to your laptop, let me know. You may want to print out UTEC manual, it has specific instructions on how to up and download stuff.
