Talking All this sub talk, What to look for when buying used ones?

I was just wondering what would a person look for when they purchase used subs? I have been trying to track down some Alpine old ZR10s. Since they don't make them anymore but there are plenty of used ones out there for sale. Also has anyone ever got there speakers refoam or rerubber? When they replace the rubber ring around the speakers that alows it to move back and forth? Like this stuff here, the new edge kit?

Don't go there its not worth it. You never know what your going to get when you buy a used sub!!! Just don't do it, its a bad thing!!! It's not worth having a sub re-coned or having the surround replaced unless it was really expensive to begin with. Sorry to say this but just don't buy a used sub, your asking for trouble.

Alpine Sube,

Your 95% correct......it for the most part ISN'T worth buying a used sub.....BUT.........if your going to do it anyway there are a few things you can look for (don't ever buy a used sub "sight unseen")

But you can make a few simple checks to try and determin if it's a deal or a dud....

First.....the sniff test......does it smell burnt??

Second.....move the cone in and out with your fingers.....is there any "grinding" does it feel as if there is sand in the voicecoil........does it hang up anywere.

Third.....listen to it if possible....at all volumes......Had a friend with a killer comp system smoke three amps in a row, cause the voice coil had a problem.....BUT the problem didn't happen till about 3/4 volume.....

So, i wouldn't reccoment buying a used sub....BUT....if you really want to, these are some of the things that you can do to keep from getting a DUD....

Peas,
AaRoN

ahhhhhh the sniff test I love that one, especially after you plug a sub into an outlet
another thing you can do is grab an ohlm meter but thats still not going to tell you how long the sub is going to last after its already been beaten on.
I'll have to dig up a cool pic of have of a sub that caught on fire
