Have a Nice Day? Rumor Mill spining again!

I was at my favorite dealer here in sac, and talked to my favorite salesman who was at the Pheonix "Drive around" thing that Subaru had... He heard some stuff from SOA reps about upcoming models: (I cant confirm any of this though)

Legacy GT- 2002 Models will have turbo... Either the 2.0 or 2.5.

Outback Legacy 2002/3 models- 4-cyl will be droped in all models and replaced with the H6

Forester Remake- Will be based on the Legacy chasis, and will have the H6, and possibly a supercharger or Turbo model.

Once again, rumors! But I trust this man more than anyone else for rumors other than SOA reps themselves, cause hes an enthusiast just like us ... (Which could mean the SOA reps are mistaken, or these are somewhat accurate)
Enjoy!

I just got back from the Phoenix ride and drive and during one of the information sessions we talked about the legacy turbo. They said Subaru seems to favor going with the turbo instead of the H6 3.0 because of the increase in gas prices. They did not say if it would be a 2.5 or 2.0. I hope it will be the 2.5. They said the Legacy turbo should be here in July, but that sounded a little to good to be true. The new legacy O.B. sedan will also be coming with the H6 and VDC. I also heard the STX will arive in 14 months.

Ya, I think the H6 VDC sedan is about to hit dealers... We heard bout that one awhile ago. The H6 in the rest of the line up (including on the lower end Outbacks) would be great!

I am glad to hear that the Forrester may be getting the H6, that thing is horribly underpowered......for towing and hauling purposes.

A quote from a SOA person here in Colorado: (no, I am not telling who it is)

"Subaru of America is currently testing the 2002 Legacy with the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine from the WRX. It is currently being trialed in the intermountain west to determine if it would be a good marketing move for us to bring here as a sports sedan competitor for BMW, Audi, Saab, Acura, Lexus, etc. If this car makes it here, it will have the 247hp vvt turbocharged engine, a 6 speed manual gearbox, lower suspension and a special sti-like interior. This product offering would supplant the Legacy GT sedan and wagon models and would be distinguished in styling by unique colors and trim. So, stay tuned and let me know if you would have any interest."

So, needless to say, I told him I would be interested! Talk about a replacement for the wife's Forester! I talked to him in person as well and he said that the H6 engine was considered by SOA to be a failure. It has not sold nearly the numbers they expected and the next Forester may be only a turbo car as well.

Question

OK....That makes no sense at all that they would want to use a turbo because gas prices are high. With a turbo you have to use premium gas! Last time I checked premium gas is majorly expensive! And the H6 gets pretty decent fuel economy...enough to make up for the price difference between regular fuel and premium fuel.

This is definitely different than what I've heard. I was told don't want to undermine the WRX market and keep the Legacy w/ the H6 and WRX with H4-T.

Requiring premium fuel in a 6-cylinder is ludicrous! Subaru would be one of the only manufacturers to require premium fuel in such an engine, especially when it is not considered a performance engine.

I'm still waiting for the STX-T... it's just what I need in a car/truck, I just hope they offer it with the turbo engine in the prototype, that would be really fast, near the WRX. And with a 6 speed box ... mmm drool.. drool.. drool ..

Ma-b they'll offer a Type-R version ! j/k

Put me down for a Legacy GT 2.0 Turbo 6speed wagon. I'd sell a kidney for that car.

Fine... put all the STi bits in the damn Legacy (6-speed tranny, VVT engine, etc.) in the US but don't let we WRX owners have any... thanks alot SOA

Oh well, if the sporty Legacy sells well (GTB--?) that'll be an extra reason to bring on over the Sti WRX

Even tuned for 89 octane, turbo charge engines can be more efficient then like-powered Sixes.

As the strickter, Gov't mandated CAFE averages take effect in the next 3-5 years, I think you will see North American car manufactuers look towards diesel and turbocharging more and more.

---------------------------------------------

I'd love a WRX-engined Legacy. I think it is ludicrous that the base Legacy engine is the same engine as in the lowest priced Scooby Impreza.

That the $27k Legacy GT sedan has the same engine as the $17k Impreza TS wagon is just plain stupid product planning IMO.

A turbocharged-4, making around 200hp would be the perfect Legacy engine.

I love these rumors that just seem to float around here like dust bunnies on the prairie. It does sound good though, a SICK replacement for the current legacy turbo. Maybe then they'll bring the STi and I can finally have ALL the cars I've been dreaming of for the last five years. Oh well, I guess we'll all be wishful thinking for some time to come.

American car makers pulled that all same trick all the time.

Corporate chevy 350 and buick 3800 series come to mind...

Just remember that GM used to dabble in Turbo and Supercharged V6 motors and produced some amazing vehicles.
Subaru may be following the General's lead.

Is a GT really worth $10k over the TS? I doubt it too, but it is a bigger and more well equiped car.

I'd be all over it! The Legacies look great but right now they are WAY under powered. I thought my 98 was sluggish. So when I had to get a new car this year and found out that the GT's had the same Hp as my 98 but were heavier, I was like no way. I bought the RS instead.

I think that the reason that the H6 has been deemed a failure in SOA's eyes is because right now its only being offered in the high end outbacks.....If they only expanded the line of vehicles being offered with the flat six.....uggggh wheres my H6 GT?? Turbos are great but being able to run that kind of Hp NA is nice too.

Wow, imagine the majority of a manufacturer's lineup having AWD and turbo. Then it's time for SOA to modify their marketing slogan: "The beauty of All Wheel Drive Plus the Brilliance of Force-Induction Engine."

A turbo legacy would be great. I would seriously consider it. Wonder if it will be a single turbo?

A number of common six cylinder engines require premium now. So for me that is not an issue.

It sure would be a nice "surprise" if a hot Legacy shows up for '02—especially with a 6-speed. In fact, it would be about the best kept secret of the year! I'm hoping for the best, but I really think something like that is more likely to occur in '03, than in '02.

Although, if Subaru did drop a bombshell like that this year, it would clearly be a 1-2 performance punch (WRX & Super-Legacy) for '02. That can't help but give Subaru a performance image here in North America—overnight! Hmmm...

If the '03 Forester is indeed built on the Legacy/Outback platform, instead of the Impreza platform, I think that's a very smart move on Subaru's part. The biggest complaint about the current Forester, is that it is too small. If it's on the Legacy/Outback platform, you can expect a wheelbase of around 104," which is an inch longer than the current Rav4, the Escape/Tribute, and equal to the new Jeep Liberty. There shouldn't be any complaints about lack of space with that vehicle. Think of a current Outback that is taller, boxier, and with less front and rear overhangs.

Also, you can probably count on the multi-link rear suspension as being part of the package, which again, is more space-efficient than the current rear strut suspension. And... I can't help but wonder if the new Outback-based Forester and the new Outback-based pickup won't share a number of body parts, much like the F-150 and Expedition do.

I guess folks who like the current-sized Forester will be disappointed, but as a "business decision," (they'll sell more vehicles) I think it's a smart move for Subaru.
