Default WRX wagon vs. Legacy GT wagon vs. Forester XT

Just sold my 02 WRX loved that car but two kids getting bigger plus need room for more gear for MTB racing and ADV. racing not enough room in that little sedan. Need help picking the super family truckster I like the room of the Legacy GT but how much handling will I give up over the WRX wagon or Forester XT. I will be autocrossing for fun. Just looking for the best mix of room and handling. Thanks Brian

The WRX wagon seems to be way more handling oriented than the other two but thats just the impression I get. The Legacy wagon and even Forester could probably be made to handle great. The ride in the Lagacy would be much stiffer and the Forester would have to drop from the clouds and get wider tires.

But these are just baseless opinions.

Me and three of my buddies throw 4 bikes on my wrx wagon and head out to Moab each spring. Theres enough room for the cargo and the gyus, though we do make a few stops to stretch.

I'm looking at the FXT as wel, and find that the Ipreza wagon and the FXT fit almost the same amount of stuff inside. Since they are the same chassis, they have similar dimensions. The only difference, is that the wagon curves in on the sides a bit more and the back hatch is more rounded, freeing up a small amount of vertical space.

People will fit in exactly the same between the two. There still isnt enough leg room for tall people in back, and you might only be able to get two car seats in safely.

Aside from the 2.5L motor, I'm having a hard time coming up with good reasons to drop my wagon for the FXT.

The squarness of my fxt helps w/ a lot of things like costco/home depot runs and can actually fit a whole lot of crap in the back w/ ease. Not sure how much more room there is than say a wrx wagon. There is w/out a doubt more headroom too! Handling you ask? There are plenty of "slammed" foresters that are tearing up the corners out there. Luckily %95 of suspension goodies from a wrx bolt right on, and makes for a great ride. Here is a pic of my ride height to give you an idea:
Minimal wheel gap, low center of gravity w/ the drop, and maybe an inch or so taller than a wrx due to the high roof line. Just some food for thought!

Well coming from an 02 WRX sedan I feel stock for stock my Legacy GT sedan handles better and pushes way less.

The Legacy may have a slightly softer ride but doesnt plow like the stock WRX. Remind you this is from an 02, the 06 may handle much better.

Hey VSB,
With out highjacking this thread to much. What kind of mods have you done?
Also how do you think your XT handles compared to a stock WRX?

As it sits right now, it's basically a stg2 setup(pushed to the limit) until my new turbo get's thrown on there next week. The suspension mods are ver.7 struts w/ H&R springs, Replica strut bars front and rear. JDM ver.7 rear sway w/ kartboy endlinks. In comparison to a "stock" wrx it is "stiff" competition.

+1 for forester. If I had to chose of the three, I would get a Forester.

I would get a forester, WRX STi, and a Legacy GT Sedan.

I have an 05 WRX wagon and an 05 FXT. The FXT is waaaaaayyyyy bigger in the rear. I can re-measure if you want, but I measured once & the difference is huge.

And as for performance & fun factor, if the only mods to either of them were a 20mm rear anti-roll bar and a good set of tires, the FXT would be a LOT more fun. My WRX has a very light STX autox prep right now, and the FXT has only the rear bar and better tires. Right now I think they're equally fun.

And the FXT is an automatic.

Now, if the choice is between 06 FXT & 06 WRX wagon, I would have to go with the WRX. They really killed the sporty feel of the FXT for 06, and it now looks like crap. Plus, the WRX now has the FXT engine - which will help a lot.

I own a Legacy GT Wagon.
I used to own a WRX Wagon.
I have driven a Forester XT
So here goes...

Handling and Steering
The Legacy is the best handling in terms of cornering balance but the Impreza has the best steering feel. The forester trails the other cars in handling but equals the Legacy in steering feel.

Ride
The Legacy wins here followed by the Forester and then the Impreza.

Performance
All three are pretty close in terms of performance. The Legacy has a little more horsepower and torque but also a little more weight. Impreza has a slight edge because of its lower weight. (FYI I owned a 2.0 WRX but i have driven the new 2.5)

Space
For two growing kids and all their stuff, the Legacy's extra cargo room advantage over the Forester and especially over the Impreza, becomes very important. I prefer the Legacy's extra length instead of the Forester's extra height because most objects are best laid flat in the cargo area.

Interior
Legacy is still significantly better than the other two in both design and quality

I would rate them Legacy, Impreza and Forester in that order.

For hauling stuff and carrying four people in comfort, The cars you mentioned are all good. However the Impreza Wagon does lack cargo room. The Forester is better in everyway but looks, the new one only more so. The Legacy GT Wagon is awesome but then so is the Outback XT. However if you need the haul more stuff around and still want something good you might want to look at the Baja. Cheaper than everything but the WRX wagon but with much more passenger and cargo room.

The Legacy GT is the best choice for roominess of passengers. The cargo carrying capacity is a better for items in the Forester although the two are close.

The handling is the WRX wagon hands down in the stock form. I own a WRX wagon stock and wife has the 05 LGT wagon. I don't see a substantial gain of cargo space in the WRX wagon over the WRX sedan.

However if you are thinking new you have to go with the 05 LGT Wagon as there is no more 5 speed in the LGT wagon for 2006 just a loaded to the hilt LGT limited with an 5 speed auto-manual.
