Question gas gauge malfunctions?

anyone here have any problems with the gas gauge flipping out? what I mean is... in accurate and erratic readings... 3/4 of a tank, and the needle starts to drop, then rise, then drop, finally back to 3/4 . it happens occasionally and at different fuel levels. I am totally lost... any ideas?

My gas guage is screwed up too. When its on E, it means I have about 5 gallons. Full to E is 8 gallons and E to the very bottom of the gas guage is another 5. It sucks having to guess how much gas is left in the tank. Maybe there's a faulty fuel sensor in the gas tank?

My gass guage seems pretty wierd as well. I get about 125 miles between Full and 3/4Tank, then about 30 miles between 3/4 and 1/4 tank. The last 1/4 tank till the Empty warning light will get me another 75 miles. Total miles per tank has been about 230.

Same problem in a 97 OBS. Started a few months ago. Seems to "go crazy" in hot weather and possibly when the a/c is turned on. Goes from full to empty to 1/4 tank to 1/2 tank to empty at random. I carefully keep track of my mileage with the trip odometer. Please post a follow-up on this thread if you find out what the problem is. One more thing - we've been having 70 degree weather for the past few days and it seems to be working fine now. Wierd!

Thx!

My 95 Legacy L has a fuel guage problem as well. It appears 95 Legacys are especially notorious for this problem, but maybe it happens to other models as well. Here's a discussion about it on alt.autos.subaru, if I can make the link work. Click here.
