Default Help with CEL and knock sensor

My CEL came on a couple of weeks ago. Intermittent at first. When I had it scanned they told me it was the "knock sensor". Is this a part that I can easily buy and throw in or does this sound like a job for the stealer ship?
The light cycles off about ever 5 days, then will stay off for the next 4 or so key cycles.
Any help here?
Thanks,
Tim

Well, the knock sensor detects engine 'detonation' (pre-ignition). Detonation can be caused for various reasons (I'll let someone more knowlegable handle those) and if left unfixed could cause terminal damage to your engine...

I can't really be more specific with 'its the knock sensor'. Could also mean (I assume) that the sensor has gone bad as you've assumed. They are typically mounted directly on the block, so replacing one most likely wouldn't be a big hassle.

Knock sensor replacement is a piece of cake. If you're looking at the engine, it is on the right side between the two intake manifold pipes. It is held on with a 12mm bolt and has one wire coming out of it.

FWIW, I had the same CEL come on a couple weeks ago. I pulled the knock sensor out, cleaned it up and put it back in and haven't had any more CELs. You might try that firtst before spending $70 on a new one.

I am in the process of selling my Legacy, so, for me the $80 I spent could mean the difference between a sale and no-sale.
Taking it off was very easy, it is located directly under the throttle cables on the drivers side of the engine. Putting the new one in was a total PITA!!! I have somewhat XL hands, and it took me a long time to line up the 12mm bolt and the damn hole it was to go in. It is in such a funky position, it is a real pain, oh, yeah, there is also some vacuum line thingy directly above the fricken thing.
Oh well, bottom line is that I do not have any CEL!!! yea!

Cheers.

Yeah, they must be a real POS, the parts guy I talked to just nodded and said, "yep, that sounds right for that year" when I told him I needed a knock sensor for my '01.
Also, by the fact that they had 8 in stock made me believe they go through these on a regular basis.

Cheers.

+1 on the thing with the hands! It took me so long to get that bolt to catch just enough to screw it in... my hands were scratched up pretty good after that.
