Exclamation MY99' RS W/Intake sys, A potenial problem w/ MAF?

I posted eariler about purchasing a MY99 RS. The car has MAF instead of MAS from what I'm told by I-club people. Subiegrl also mentioned that it's not good to have a intake sys with MAF. Can someone tell me why can be a potential probelm in the future if I do buy this car (This car areadly has an intake sys from the current owner as well as 35,000 miles)? Is it not a wise purchase, if so should I get a MY00 instead.
Thanks

Proper intakes on MY99's will work, but the problem is the sensitivity of the MAF sensor.

You really need to get more info on this car if you want our help.

Ask the sell what intake he has and what suspension, then we can better serve you.

Feel free to send me an e-mail or a PM with more questions.

*find out which intake - good point - very important to know this... dont want to run into problems down the road

*run the Vin at your local Subie dealership to see what repairs have been made on the car since it has been sold... if they took it to a Subie dealer it will be logged... give you an idea of the issues it may have had if any...

I have a '99 RS with a JC Sports intake on it. I have blown two MAF's, I think the second was defective. The key is to mount the intake very solidly. I have added two brackets to mine and have had no problems since. If you can, get the original intake with the car for safety sake. You can run the car without the MAF plugged in, but mine won't go above 3500 RPM, which is about 75 MPH. Yes, it's a good idea to research any performance car before buying it, the fact that it has an intake tells you that it wasn't owned by an old lady. 35k miles is low by my standards, mine has over twice that. It is a very fun dar to drive!

I have a '99 RS with a JC Sports intake. I have had MAF problems on two occations. The first time the intake had been on the car for about 9 months with no problems. I have done a lot of research on this and I am told that vibration is what causes the problem 95% of the time. I found a new one at Subaruparts.com for $222.80. They are located in Tacoma, Wa. and have the best prices around for Subaru parts. I put it in the car and it lasted about 25 miles. I was a little agro. to say the least. I returned it and got a replacement at no charge. This time I mounted the sucker very solidly; added two brackets in addition to the one supplied with the intake. It has been back on the car for two weeks now with no problems. This is the way I feel: I love this car, I would buy it again in a heart beat. If you have the chance to get a '00, I think I would get it instead, especially if you are going to have the aftermarket intake. It does sound good! If you can not find a '00 in good shape, don't be to discouraged by the MAF problem, it is a great car. I would ask for the original intake system if it is still available. You can put it back on and use a drop in K&N filter, it is just as good, you just don't get that sound at full throttle. See snorklectomy thread somewhere else in this forum.
