Talking can anyone suggest a turbo for me?

i have a 2000 rs with a wrx swap, maintaining the rs tranny (short gears are fun).

anyway, i'm starting to look at different turbos, and i was wondering what people could suggest for me if i told you what i was looking for in the turbo.

i want something with quick spool, but something that hits pretty hard as well (in other words, i want something that hits like a vf22 but possibly slightly harder, and i also want something that's not going to lag like crazy). i want something that my transmission can handle (i'd like a max of 330-350 whp when everything is said and done). i'd like to upgrade to ra gears at some point, but for now i have an act clutch/flywheel. i want a good quality turbo that's going to last me a whille... i want basically a do-it-all turbo, as i do drag race occasionally (legally lol) and i would like to start getting into auto-x as well.

i'm looking for ANY turbo. i don't care what brand it is, so long as its pretty much a direct bolt up. i don't want to have to rotate anything or hack the crap out of my car. i would also like something that can run with a larger tmic. i don't know how competent i feel just yet in hacking my bumper to pieces to fit a fmic, but will probably do that in the end. i would plan on running everything w/a utec and pink injectors and walbro. i'm thinking that a big turbo would be nice with my shorter gears.

so, what do you guys have for me? i would also like something that i could get for $1200 or less (new or used).

-mike

this is true, but i'm willing to compromise a bit for something with quicker spool.

what do people like here for upgraded turbos? what works well with the wrx... besides the usual vf series turbos? i want something different, but something that at least some people have experience with.

You have conflicting wants. Probably limits you to a PE1825 or a clone, or a GP32 with a 42 lb compressor. Not sure if the tranny is up to either.

lol, yeah i know i have conflicting wants. i guess i could live with something that's 50/50 as far as spool vs. power. i just dont want something that's only going to start making power at like... 3600 rpms. i'd like something similar to the stocker (i like the spool) just with a hell of a lot more power.

i've been reading up on the 20g's a bit, as i've heard some good things about them, especially the fp20g. what are people's opinions of them?

i'm under the impression the fpgreen is really nice too, but don't they have a lot of lag? i know they have a TON of power up top. would my tranny even be able to hold that?

i've seen lots of people talking about gt35, sr30, avo turbos... what are these like?

twinscroll would be nice too, but it seems like i'd have to change a lot more of the exhaust piping than i'd want to.

okay, i'll make this a bit easier... i want something that my tranny will like, something that my motor will like (i'm in the process of buying/rebuilding an old ej22t block if that helps), and something that will compliment the shorter gears i have. what would YOU do?

Then I think twin scroll (VF-36/37, PE1825, GT32) is your only option.

I'm putting my $$$ on a Momentum EJ5-40T. It is supposed to spool almost as fast as a TD04, and have a cold side like a VF22. I will soon find out.

your pink injectors are going to get maxed our fairly easily on anything bigger than a vf series turbo if the tune is anything but VERY conservative. I would start with bigger injectors personally, and then call dead bolt and explain your goals.

probably around 320whp max, with everything said and done.

i expect to have some lag, but quick spool would be nice. after talking to a few people since i put this thread up, they suggested that i go with a quick spooling turbo because it will feel a lot better in my car than one that just hits hard when it finally hits.

so, other than the stock turbo, what's a turbo that will spool pretty quick, but put me in the 300-320whp range after a tune, be able to run off an upgraded top mount (for the time being), and still slam me in my seat?

i think i cleared up a few things with this post as far as what i'm looking for.

what's the momentum ej5-40t like?

i really like the sounds of the "g" turbos, ie 16, 18, 20g. i'm pretty positive they bolt right on, and i know they all have some good gains.

Hey, Big Gun,
Got your PM but couldn't respond b/c Nasioc went down on us. From what I read the -40T will spool fast, but his expressed whp targets are actually pretty high. That's why I think he needs to go to twin scroll, with a relatively large compressor wheel.

When you get the -40T tuned, do a quick write and see if you can post the dyno graph. Am interested in what it looks like on a 4EAT. Cheers,
scooter

16G will be too small.
18G probably wont spool that fast, will get you to those numbers on the right dyno.
20G IMO wont spool that fast.

how does an 18g or 20g spool in relation to a vf22? i've been in some gc's with vf22's and they're wayyy too laggy. they weren't tuned well though.

APS SR40 or a TD05 'super' 16g. The APS should get you to the HP you want. I have the S/R30 and I am at 262whp @ only 17.5psi. I have also installed one of Jerry's super 16g's and they spool very well and make very good power. May get you within 20whp of your 300+ whp goal but with really good spool compaired to the bigger turbos.

Yes the S/R30 is rated to 340hp and the S/R40 is rated to 400hp.

Making pretty big power up top (340whp) just doesn't lend itself well to lightning quick spool, especially on a farily small displacement engine.

Personally, if you say you're going auto-xing with the occassional drag strip run, I'd think that area under the curve and fast spool would be what you're after. You can achieve better acceleration via a set of gears and a 4:44 rear end swap but stay with a smaller turbo such as the Super 16G from Deadbolt.

Call Deadbolt, talk to Jerry, he'll give you great info.

finding a clutch that will hold 340whp w/ an RS tranny will be VERY difficult (dosn't exisit)

go with the twinscroll or go simple with a used vf-39 and call her good
