Default Should the fan blow air into or away from the radiator?

I got a CHECK ENGINE light. Auto Zone's free check gizmo read that the fan is spinning in the wrong direction, twice. There was 2 codes for the same thing. I believe the code was P0430, but not 100% sure.

I looked at the fan just after shutting off the engine and the fan was blowing air AWAY from the radiator. Is that right?

The fan blows air towards the engine. That's the same way that air is forced though the rad when the car is travelling.

The fans cannot spin in the wrong direction and there is no code for that. There is a code for improper fan operation but that one isn't it, in fact I am not aware of the existence of a P0430 code. I suggest you verify the code again.
The fans work by pulling cooler air through the radiator.

...news to me. Seems most CEL's reported on this board are the result of tinkering/modifications.

True.
And, with the hundreds of different things in OBDII that can set codes, it's amazing that most cars, Subaru and otherwise, are able to drive around without the CEL on all the time.

I just looked up the code P0430 from my '03 WRX manual under DTC's, and there is no such code in my book (Ebay CD version).

p0430 is a generic code for "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)" - not sure if that's even relevant for our cars...

nice search engine to look up codes:

If the fan in mounted on the front of the radiator it should push air through it, if it's mounted on the back of the radiator it should pull air through it.

That make sense, otherwise there will be close to zero net airflow through the radiator when driving at low speeds with the fan on. Also, my guess is that you would not want to blow hot engine air towards the radiator.

I wouldn't be desireable to blow hot air through the radiator
