Default Greenish gunk / coolant leak?

02 wrx, 5MT.

1. while fitting ALK, I noticed a greenish layer of gunk on the underside of the transmission casing. Is this some kind of weather proofing (long shot, just want to rule this out)?

I did spill transmission fluid down the tranmission case when filling it (pipe came out of the hole), I guess that could be it?

2. No matter how many times I top up the coolant expansion tank, it's back down to minimum within a few days. Engine runs fine, I'm sure it's not burning off, and the level in the engine never seems to drop. Leak? or something else?

Thanks

you have a leak - check all of the hoses (a loose clamp will leak - not sure what would dump it on the transmission, though)

Back of a head gasket?

Shoot...

So green gunk is dried up coolant, not tranny fluid or weather proofing ?

I wonder why it only seems to use up the expansion tank fluid though. The engine never seems to run low on coolant. I changed coolant that day as well, and the amount that drained out looked about right.

I'll put it on the ramps again tomorrow and see if I can identify the source.

That would be bad, right?

Yeah, head gasket would be bad but that's just a stab in the dark. Before you start to get worried, look underneath your car and try to find out what that stuff is. I doubt it will be tranny fluid, and it may be some form of undercoating, but I doubt that to on the transmission case. I really can't tell you because I can't see what you are looking at. If its rubbery, its undercoating. Coolant just dries to a crusty green flaky powder. But since you are using coolant, just look around. I know my mom has a 2002 WRX and every now and then I have to add to the reservoir tank. Not every few days though. Good luck.

It's a coating from the factory most likely.

Dried coolant wouldn't be gunky. It would either crust or stay on dry.

Hmm.

I'll top up the tank again tonight and check level again Tues morning.

I have to go under the car anyway to adjust toe (post ALK install), so I'll snap a pic of the mystery gunk then.

Thanks...

It might if it was leaking continuously, which it sounds like it is from the fact that he has to keep filling the expansion tank.

realwomble: You need to find and fix the leak. Check all the hoses, clamps, etc for leaks. If you can't find the leak yourself, take the car into a garage and have it pressure tested.
