Default Electrical Ghost

hey guys/gals I have a 1990 Subaru Legacy with approx 145,000 miles on the clock and up till now I haven't had many problems. The other day I had the alt, brake, and stop light, lights came on. I turned off the ignition and restarted the car and the lights went out. I stopped at a store and started the car again and the lights came back on again, this time the stop/start didn't work so they stayed on. About 2 hours later the car died. The battery was dead. Had the battery recharged and tested and it tested ok. Had the alternator tested and the autozone guy said that it was putting out 2 amps. and that I needed a new one. Today I go out to turn the car around to take out the alternator and I notice that the lights are out again. but also that the tach, door indicator, temp, fuel, tranny selector lights on the dash don't work. Also the heater doesn't work. Is this a bad alternator or have I burned something out.

The alt is dead and you need to replace it. Since the alt is dead the car is trying to run off the battery. The battery can only run the car for so long before it dies.

Well if it is the alt, it is easy enough to replace

Have you bought your altenater yet? If not don't buy it at Autozone. I say this from experience. Go to Napa or KOI. They may cost more but you will have to change the alt only once. Autozone you may have to do it a couple times till they give you a good one or untill you demand your money back.

It ended up being nothing but the battery dying at an odd moment. The alternator and all are just fine. I'ts been 4 days and I havne't had any problems. Thanks to all and this is a fine site.
